newborn tips
« on: October 08, 2013, 11:20:07 am »
So here I am who'd have thought it'd be so soon ;)

Ok give me you best tips to get a newborn to sleep (or back to sleep!) I've clearly forgotten everything in the last five years but also I now don't have the time to just spend with one baby so the faster the better! ;)  I don't necessarily mean indepent sleep just things I can try in desperation which may work!

Typically J is fairly easy going and will nod of with little help, H is harder work and so trying to get them to sleep at the same time isn't that easy.  If J gets OT he struggles big time to wind down also so any thoughts on that appreciated.  Two screaming babies at one time is not fun!

TIA  :-*

My best tricks are white noise and a dark room! Each of my girls has their own white noise machine (with battery back up!) and roomdarkening blinds/curtains.  Are they swaddled? That worked well for the older two but E does fine without it (tummy sleeper anyways). I used shh/pat a lot with S but this time around I just dont have time for that every nap so I end up doing some ap when needed - holding, feeding, sling etc.  Hmmm with twins though, if J is fussy and ot could you wear him in a wrap while you put H down?

Dark room, white noise, shhhh/pat... Same soothing music you listened to when you were pg with them?  Your voice?  Your singing on repeat??  Your clothing in their cot??

Dark, white noise - a sling, too. In the 'witching hour' when I was trying to sort out Stan too, Audrey would be calm and quiet in a sling - not asleep, but at least calm and quiet.

We have 2 swings. They don't seem 2 like any of the standard stuff. I had h in a sling earlier but obviously can't have them both. I do think perhaps h does need dark and white noise whereas j is more likely 2 put himself 2 sleep anyway. How long till they grow out of the witching hour? That's the hardest bit. Well actually h been awake nearly all day I'm not winning any battles 2day  :(

Have u tried bum rocking?  I think it is from NZ baby whisperer.  I have since found out that it does calm down the nerves.  Baby can lay on the side or on tummy, just gently push up to rock.

I would sit on a yoga ball with Millie. She had relux, so I did figure out while she was screaming, but not until she was 11 weeks.   :(   The yoga ball allowed me to stop pacing with her, but we were still moving.

Ok so I have a 3hr turn around between feeding two and them actually sleeping I'm spending so much time tryin to help them sleep it's time for the next feed!  Need some help! I can't just hold them both to sleep it's pretty impossible. Sometimes one will go off quite easily only to wake 5mins later and then back and forth for the next hr or more.

Bouncy chair?  J would doze off in that with the vibrate going.  Car seat?  Pram?  I used to feed J and then put her in the car seat and go into town, transfer to the pram when we got there and take myself for a coffee which (hopefully) she would sleep through!  Then we'd head home when she started stirring.  Also agree about the sling though obviously just for one at a time.  I think the evening witching hour(s) lasted until about 10 weeks for us, hang in there hun xxx

You can wear both in a sling. I've seen some hardcore baby wearers do it but it's obviously not easy. My SIL had a tandem carrier too I'll ask her about it. Hugs hun. Xxx

The swing, white noise and a tight swaddle were key for us.  I would get DD to sleep and then put in her a swing and she always slept longer stretches in it.  If she stirred when I put her in, I would jiggle it really quick and hard and she would settle back down.

This worked well with Zac too who was touchy and fluxy. Bottom patting, rocking, white noise. Z hated swings, but he loved a baby seat to sleep in, it didn't rock itself (but I could move it) or have anything distracting. (Sounds like what Katherine describes actually)
Will they take pacis? (If you want to give them) may be useful for H?

Harvey Karps 5 s work well. (Swaddle, side, shhh, swinging, sucking (paci) )

J will take a paci but he's been plugged and replugged so many times by my mum recently that last night he was just looking for it all the time and they're not in our room as we don't have room so I can't just keep going in and putting it back in - so just not sure what to do on that score.  J will be a thumb sucker without a doubt just needs to get there!

It's just so hard trying to get them to sleep at the same time.  Everything seems so hit and miss atm.  They are swaddled and I've tried white noise.  They're still napping downstairs and although I could try the dark room etc DS1 was so hard to sleep anywhere other than his cot I'm keen for these two to be a bit more flexible...if possible ;)

I expect the car would work but I can't drive for a few more weeks, the buggy I expect will also work...
