EW - 6.5 mth old - WHY???
« on: October 24, 2013, 20:31:37 pm »
DS2 after 6 mths of sleep training is finally taking his naps for over an hr and usually 1 hr 20 min to 1 hr 30 min!!  FINALLY!!  BUT with the new nap success, DS2 is giving me early wakings anywhere around 5-5.30AM.  My resettling success rate is 50%!  I am hoping someone can find something with my easy that point me to why EW are happening?  We aim for WU to be 6.30.

The last two days:

WU/A/E: 5.30-7.45 (EW couldn't resettle; BF: 6.30; solids; 7.30)
S:7.45-9.30 (15 min to resettle at 30 min mark)
A/E: 9.30-12 (BF: 10.30; solids hr later)
S:12-1.30
A/E: 1.30-4.20 (BF: 2; solids hr later)
CN: 4.20-4.50
A: 4.50
BF: 6.40
Bed: 7

EW: 5.15 (very hard to resettle but successful, had to PU and resettled till normal WU of 6.30)
WU/E/A: 6.30-9.20 (BF upon WU; solids hr later)
S: 9.20-10.40
A/E: 10.40-1.35(BF upon WU; solids hr later)
S: 1.35-3 (resettled after 30 min, back to sleep)
A/E:3 (BF upon WU; solids hr later)
BF: 6
Bed: 6.15 (resettled at 6.45; 8; 9)
NF: 11.30 and 4

Any suggestions?

Are you finding that the EWs happen more on the day he's had the CN? I would work on dropping the CN altogether. Also, does he go to sleep on his own? How do you resettle him?

Also, I would look at working towards a set morning nap of 9am. On days J would wake really early, I wouldn't let her sleep earlier than 9am. Try and not expose him to any lights until 6am and take him out of the house prior to morning nap if you have to distract him and then tone things down as you're getting closer to 9am. I find that if I have a set morning nap time, it keeps the day more or less the same and we don't end up with a crazy A before bedtime or needing to do a catnap.

I think if you do that - try and not offer morning nap until 9am and drop the catnap, you might find the EWs will get better

Thanks for the response.  We have always tried for a nap 3 hrs after waking and we always try to have WU at 6.30, but with the EW that we couldn't resettle it was hard.  Are you saying that with a typical 6.30 WU, no matter what time he gets up to have first nap at 9?  Will give that a try.

All EW seem to actually happen when we don't have the CN. We only give CN if we have had the super EW or REALLY bad naps.  Prior to the EWs, typically it had been less than once a week.

What I find is that if his nap only ends up being 1 hr or 1 hr 10, 1 hr 20 than his bedtime is earlier (6PM is usually the earliest) and then we get the EW.   The pattern seems to be whatever time he goes to bed his wake up is 11.5 hrs later.

For resettling we will try plugging a soother and shh/pat and hold arms as he likes to flail them.  If that does't work, we pick up and hold and shh. This usually works all other times he needs resettling, but at the EW hours he seems much more alert and awake which makes it that much more of a challenge.  He typically has a night feed between 3.30-4.30, and STILL will have EW!

He goes to sleep on his own with a soother (spits out after a bit for the night).

With regards to the 9am nap, I wouldn't do a nap earlier than 9am if he's had an EW and you can't resettle. So in your routine you posted morning nap from 7:45-9:30am, which is why I mentioned aiming for at least 9am nap but if he wakes at 6.30am, then 9.30am would be a good time to do a nap.

If he goes to sleep some nights as early as 6pm then 5.0 isn't really an EW, which is why I said earlier to try and offer the 1st nap around the same time so that your day stays the same more or less.
