Wake ups 30 minutes into day nap & 5:30am calling out
« on: October 11, 2013, 19:00:28 pm »
Hi

We are currently having wake ups from day naps after 30 minutes. He calls out for mummy, stands up if left long enough (still obviously tired -rubbing eyes etc). Mummy will say on the baby monitor "it's okay Austin, it's still naptime, find bear..." and he will lie down and go back to sleep for anywhere between another 30 mins to an hour (1 to 1 1/2 total). We have not gone in to see him and if we ignored him he would end up crying for us and waking up properly.

He has also started to wake up at 5:30 each morning (started after day nap wake ups). Again, he will go back to sleep for 30 / 45 mins more when you speak to him on the monitor and tell him it is still night time. We haven't got him up once at 5:30 (6am is our cut off point).

So in total he is having 10:15 - 11 hours is at night which is on the low side for him (although he has always been on the underside of amount of sleep needed - usually 11 hours). He's 22 months old. Always had a decent routine. Nap time starts at around midday.

Thing is, he goes to Nursery 3 days a week and doesn't wake up after 30 mins there ever. He always goes down about 12:45 - 1 with them.

We also have back molars coming up (no sign of any yet but lots of chewing and usual signs that we know by now). He gets a bit clingier during these times which could explain the 30 min wake ups. But it doesn't seem to be as he goes down fine and it's 30 minutes on the dot each time. It seems to have been going on longer than just putting it down to teeth (ie either way there is some habit in it).

Anyone any suggestions? Have tried putting him down a little earlier. We just get earlier wake ups. Do we just need to ride it out (been 3 weeks or more for day naps 1 week or more for early mornings) or actively do something??!

Thanks any suggestions much appreciated!

Have you tried giving medication before naps? It could be discomfort mixed with OTness but if you can eliminate the discomfort then he may sleep through without your help. If you find it makes. Difference you could also try give meds as a dream feed t around 3am which may help him sleep longer as he goes into lighter sleep in the early morning.

If he has got OT from the lack of sleep, you could try moving his nap a little earlier.

Another thought, if he sleeps better at nursery, it's likely he's getting more stimulation from the other children, can you tire him out a bit more (I realise this can be harder as the weather worsens to winter).

What do you think?

Thanks! He's had calpol before day nap but think it's turned into a pattern - he hasn't been given them at nursery. Having said that we've given him them before bed at night and seen a much improved first part of the night sleep so teething is definitely a major factor. I guess from. What you've said with the tiring him out more we could move his nap later - but it wasn't long ago he had his nap at 11:30 rather than 12. Definitely got stuff to try though, thanks!

Fingers crossed with the teeth - they're yucky.

As for moving the nap later, personally I wouldn't make any massive changes if he's only just moved to noon and he's teething. Perhaps try a bit more physical activity in the morning and if that doesn't work then try shifting the nap a bit later x
