I don't go to her when she is playing, unless it becomes very extended in the middle of the night in which case sometimes going and tucking her in reminds her that it's time to go back to sleep...

So before when I really pushed A times, really high, we just got 30 min naps (with happy rolling around wake ups...) So I always was sure 30 min naps were OT for us.

Then I started putting her down closer to 2 hours, and we started getting some nice long naps.

The night waking has been a bit mixed - sometimes playing, sometimes kind of yodelling (my best description of it, it's not crying!) and sometimes moaning which turns into crying. Often I have found me going to her makes it worse, so unless she is really crying and sounding like she wants me I often leave her.

So today we put down at 9am after a 6:30 wake up. 30 mins ish nap...

Then I got her up after she'd gone on and off for 30 mins with the thumb and playing in between, and decided to push her next A time right out. She was crabby at 12:30 and rubbing her eyes (body clock?) and lunch was a bit fraught, but I distracted her with some baby TV after and kept her up until 1:30. She still didn't show any particular tired signs. Actually, she may have yawned once at around 1:15. Anyway, it's currently 3pm and she's still sleeping.........

Update - she woke at 3:15 crying. Seemed crabby and eyes were rolling when I gave her the bottle, like she hadn't slept enough.

I can't decide if she woke early due to OT, or if it was because I'm going to need to split her milk feed (we were previously doing 7am 7oz, 2:45ish 5/6oz and 7pm 7oz, no 11am bottle anymore)

She was fussy over lunch so she didn't eat loads so I suppose it's possible.

Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear.

Awake for 30 mins at 4 30. Then again at 5 30. Then 7.

The A time push is wrong for us I am sure of it.

Hi Joanna, I know LO has been susceptible to OT and 30min naps but I'm actually wondering if she's UT.  Do you know what an UT nap looks like for her?  I'm thinking yesterday her first nap came after a lie-in and 2.5hrs A and maybe the short nap was UT even though 30mins is typically OT.  She also has mostly woken happy and playing at night, is that right?  I agree with Layla about pushing that first A time - distraction, change of scenery, nothing too strenuous and see how she goes.

Sorry if I'm adding to the confusion, but just throwing it out there because I was always reluctant to up A times when my DD was younger for fear of OT, and I ended up with UT problems for a while (benefit of hindsight!)

Sorry to interrupt! Can short naps be due to the baby being overtired? Am I understanding right? So much to learn!

Yes, short naps can be either OT or UT - OT can often be 30mins and UT 45mins, but of course they are all different and you can't necessarily take that as a rule!  Another thing is with OT they will often wake crying and with UT will wake up happy, but again depends on the baby  ::)

Joanna - follow your mummy gut and if you think the A time push is wrong then pull it back.  It's all about trial and error to see what works for your LO  :-*
