Our faves are Snakes and Ladders, Guess Who (maybe a bit older), Connect 4 (again the strategy is a bit older but still fun), Twister (hilarious), Tummy Ache and all those Orchard Toys games like Tell the Time.

Spotty Dogs is a great Orchard Games 'first try' type thing. Both my kids can play that one, even together!

Candy Land is a great first board game as it uses colours to know which square to move to instead of counting.

Not a board game either, but I just started playing memory with F this week and she's really enjoying it. We have a set of Winnie the Pooh cards which we use for it, we are up to playing with about 10 matching pairs atm.

Orchard games are a big hit here! We have Dotty Dinosaurs, crazy chefs, the shopping game, the flower pot game, doodle bugs, where's my cup cake and one of the jigsaws! The shopping list game is good because you can buy different packs to supplement it.

http://www.toysandlearning.co.uk/orchard-toys.php

Like Liz said, my two will play together now as the games are simple but fun. They are also made of sturdy card so haven't disintergrated like the bits in some of our games have. They are also a good price and make good birthday presents!

Some great ideas, thanks. I'm going to look at all of them properly.

We've got the orchard games Tell the Time and Crazy Chefs.

Any recommendations of a particular snakes and ladders?  I think he'd like that.  We have played a few roll the dice and move the piece type games which were just pages from kid's magazines. he liked those, I need something more durable and perhaps with a bit more to do.

Not tried memory game in a while so I'll have another go.

He's been enjoying dominoes and two dice bingo, I can just see him itching for more games :)
I think he'd like connect 4 too.  And it would be great to play Guess Who, I wonder if he'd 'get it' yet...maybe over the coming year.

They don't really get connect 4 until later either - my 2 end up fighting over where they are putting the pieces - and they certainly can't stand it if another kid blocks their row. They can't 'see' diagonals either. DD just posts them in, and enjoys that, but it is actually a remarkably frustrating game round here!!

DS does understand now, and I guess he has since 4+, but DD, sigh!

Maybe I'll get one just for the fun of posting the pieces in the slots. With only one child there is no competition, just us playing together, perhaps less frustrating as it will be geared in his favour.  I saw a huge outdoor connect 4 at the nursery he'll be starting in about 6 months which I'd forgotten about until this thread - he liked posting those pieces too (bit less fiddly but it was so big that made it hard in a different way).

He's definitely into playing games that involve number dice and taking turns so I think snakes and ladders will be great.

yes H loves Snakes and Ladders and ours has Ludo on the reverse which he also likes.
we also have crazy chefs and the shopping game and pop to the shops which I would say is more for around 4 years?

We also play memory games. H has a pack of Octonaut cards which are fun to do that with..
Tinkerbell - those games look amazing...H would love them!

Love the look of thr Richard Scarry games!! We are huge Scarry fans hete, but DS is 5.5....are the games too young for him do you think?

Ravensburger and HABA both make some "my first board games" which DS liked at 3ish. Worth taking a browse on amazon for them, I am not sure how available they are outsidevof Germany.  I will have a look and post when I am not on my tablet, linking is hard!

and Dont Break the Ice, which dd will still sometimes play!

She had Perfection, but hated the sound it made when all the pieces popped out....but that's just 'her'....this is a really fun game!

Memory and CandyLand were big hits too.....and also Zingo, which is kinda like Bingo...she loved that!

Becky - which did you get? Eye Found it - yes?
I like the look of both those but Busy, busy airport is £39.00 on amazon - that price can't be right surely?  Is it out of production or something?

my kids love Monoply Junior and there is one where there is three picture boards, and a bunch of round peices with parts of the picture on it that you place in the right spot. I can't remember the name of that one... I think it ends in 'ino'.
DS also really likes the Cherche et Trouvé ones...I don't know how they are marketed in English. Maybe 'look and find'?

There's a couple of great ravensburger jigsaw puzzles (84 piece) in the look and find range but at £38 and £20 each they seem too expensive to me.  Didn't manage to find any board game though.  Maybe someone else knows it?

If you're still after snakes and ladders recommendations then we have the peppa pig one which has been good for this year as it onlygoes iup to 50 squares so it's a quicker game than the other one we have (which is the gruffalo and goes to 100). Your DS may not be a peppa pig fan but you might want to check the number of squares in any game you get.

Orchard games wise,  If You See A Crocodile is a good one for an early board game. Someone also recommended Monster Bingo to me but we've not played it yet.  The shopping game is very popular here too. Lily has also started to "get" top trumps this year. I'm sure there's something else she likes but I can't remember now.... Will be back if it comes to me!

Ravensburger board games are things like Lotti Karotti, Colourama - both are on amazon UK, but they are a bit pricey.

This is also a really really good game
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Simba-ZOCH601132100-Zoch-601132100-Since/dp/B004L87UQO/ref=sr_1_5?s=kids&ie=UTF8&qid=1382643373&sr=1-5&keywords=zoch

I could swear it was by Ravensburger but looks like another company has taken this one over. But it is still int he same Ravensburger box. Weird. Anyway it was a huge hit, "game of the year" last year and is really fun.  I know it looks German but instructions are in all languages inside so it's just the name that is odd.

Haba games are good as well, most are just tiny little boxes with a simple game.   Beautiful wooden pieces, sturdy cardboard, well made.  So for instance
http://www.amazon.de/Haba-4093-Bella-Bl%C3%BCmchen/dp/B004MXRDP6/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1382643506&sr=8-16&keywords=haba+spiele
but maybe you can't get them in England? ???

Will look up that Richard Scarry game, thanks Tink!

Thinking about it, would you be up for a game that's not a board game? If so we love, love, love Rory's Story Cubes!

Fantastic for any number of players, great for taking in your bag for meals out, encourage language development and social skills. I've just bought an add on set, and some more as gifts.

I've looked at Rory's story cubes before and thought I might wait a year or two before getting them.  They are lovely. For now we have some wooden blocks which have 2 letters and 4 pics per block which we can use in a similar (but simplified) way (although not to take out but he never wants to play anything when we go out, not yet anyway).  The Rory's cubes are tagged at 6yo +, and although I'm sure he would understand the pictures and concept I just think he might be more 'pleased' with it when he is a bit older.

btw thank you everyone for continuing to add your fav games.  I'm taking it all in!

Katt is that not a bit too simple?  I'm looking at it wondering where the fun and game play is??  I can't imagine us playing more than one round and never getting it out again? But is appears to have good reviews so surely i am missing something??

I'm sure amazon said suitable from 3+.... Though I only skimmed it and I was on my phone so could easily have misread. I was thinking of getting them for my daughter,  who will be 4 by Xmas.  She's got a great imagination - do you think she'll get it?

We had many games with grandparents etc, it really taught her about talking turns and being a good sport etc and was funny when people keep getting the same colour etc and wishing for a certain colour so you can finish your house so it was fun but maybe we are a bit simple  ;) ;D We also had lots of Orchard games that have been mentioned like Spotty Dogs, Lunchbox and Incy Wincy Spider but this was good old fashioned fun all based on the luck of the die!

Lovelylily - yes, I'm sure the cubes would work from 4. Especially if she's got such a good imagination. I can see all kinds of uses for them over the next few years.

We have one by Orchard called Bus Stop that cadan likes. We make up all sorts of stories about why the people are getting on and off the bus.

I was also going to suggest Junior monopoly.  They do a monsters uni one if he likes that.

I think DS started to play it at that sort of age. Sort of  ;). DD can cope with rolling and counting, but then t ends to lose herself in a world of going her own way around the board  ::) ::).

They really don't like snakes and losing at this age either  ::).

my three year old loves Choco, and a monster bingo game by Orchard Games. Both have easy rules and go quickly so he doesn't get bored. He also likes The Cat In The Hat I Can Do That game, but he needs an adult to play that that one. The other two he can play just with DD (who is 5 1/2). Rory's Story Cubes are also popular around here.

Sara we play lots of games with dice, one dice or two, have done for several months. DS loves it I'm sure Z would love it too. We don't have snakes and ladders yet (it's on the list though) but have played very similar board games from some of his toddler magazines (bob the builder game and such, dice, counting, moving, some spaces say go back or go forward etc).
For some other ideas - we play 2 dice bingo here so I write numbers from 2 - 12 on cards and we shake out 2 dice, DS adds them up and we all cross off the number if we have it. It was DS's idea so I just ran with it.
We also (but not often) do a 1 or 2 dice physical game, I made an indoor assault course with a few chairs and a bean bag etc then lay out numbered cards I made which have an instruction on each card. So you throw dice, move than number of spaces (climbing chairs or crawling through table tunnel as you go) then when you get on your number you follow the instruction, eg no.5 do 5 frog jumps, no.6 do 6 star jumps and sing a song about stars...etc  I made it up for days when we couldn't go out but he needed exercise.
We are getting the Frustration from our list too with the lovely 'pop' dice in the dome at the centre of the board (I'm getting the unbranded version which is just like the old Frustration as the new Frustration has some added thing that I think makes the game more advanced or confusing).

Ooh I wondered about getting that one Sara.  There's a Thomas the Tank snakes and ladders too. Or to just go for the traditional version. Not decided yet (will get it with Xmas money).  Great to hear Z is loving the dice  :D

Here's a link to two dice bingo where you can print blank sheets and also play on-line, it generates numbers. Not that you need it but DS liked the 'official' looking papers I printed off even though I filled them in by hand.

There's also extensions (for later/older) to subtract one die from the other or multiply rather than add them together.

Ohhh love! Z is very mathematical, much more so interested in counting/numbers/shapes/fractions etc than he is letters and writing. I think he's going to be an engineer ::)

He would have loved ThomasTTE mum and dad brought that one back though and here we don't have big ones like that one. It's fantastic that it's BIG!

Just coming by to thank those of you who recommended TIME SHOCK and BUSY TOWN - fabulous - both a big hit for Xmas.  DS was instantly taken by them both (we didn't turn the timer on time shock for him but he sat focused on it until all the pieces were in) and after BT I had to have about 10 turns on Time shock because I was determined to get all the pieces in before the time ran out (finally succeeded). I can see it being along lasting game through the coming years.  We all played Busy town together, I loved looking for the pictures and the grandmothers liked that we all won or lost together.  Great stuff!
DS also fell in love with POP UP PIRATE (which was recommended on another thread I had I think but poss here too), we played many games at various intervals throughout Xmas day.

other games to come too.

The boys got Who Shook Hook, a Jake and the Neverland Pirates game. Hook is balanced on a swinging net with a load of treasure pieces he's pinched and players have the move around the board and retrieve a piece of treasure with various tools as prescribed by the space you land on. If you overbalance the net and Hook falls off you lose and the player with the most pieces of treasure wins. That was a hit.

I'm back with another update and to thank those of you who suggested Guess Who and Junior Monopoly.
Guess who arrived last week and after one game where I played on his 'team' against Nana to show him how it worked he's been loving it, playing against me with no help - and winning!!
Jnr Monopoly arrived yesterday and he loved that too. We didn't play a full game as it took quite a long time and although he was focused for ages eventually he wanted to move on to something else (plus i needed to get dinner ready). He asked for it a second time in the same day though so we had another short game. It's great for adding the money up, he loves playing with money!
Big hits!!
Thank you
