3 year old waking up at 6am everyday
« on: October 24, 2013, 06:00:38 am »
Hello everyone.

My 3 year old son started nursery full time and since then he's been waking up everyday at 6am and I'm exhausted. His bedtime's at 7pm. He shares a room with his brother that goes to school and he keeps waking him up too.

What can I do to make him sleep for longer? I'm also worried that since the clocks will be going back this Sunday that it'll mean a 5am wake up  :o :o.

Please help and TIA.

We used a gro clock when our son was just over 2 & it changed our lives from 6am wake ups to 7am within days! If he wakes before then he knows he has to wait quietly in his bed until the sun comes up...he is now 3 & 8  months and loves his gro clock, always insists on us taking it with us if we go away for the night :)

Worth a try maybe?! x

No he doesn't nap zacmumme. I was thinking of buying gro clock to see if that helps, mummylou83. I pray that it will because I am exhausted as I have to do 2 different school runs.

Have you tried PD to bed a bit earlier. My Z is just 3 and he's in bed by 5.30/6 on NND and will sleep longer than if I pd later (7-7.30am)

Hope you find something that works :( I would definitely recommend groclock if you find its not a routine issue. We always say the little rhyme just before going to bed and he loves it "if you want a day of fun stay in bed until the sun!" Good luck xxx

Just to add that a Groclock isn't a magic cure - it will work, but only if you can be 100% consistent in how it is used and how you respond if he wakes before 'daytime'.

We're having the same problem! DD is just over 3yo. BT no matter what time I put her down is generally 7.30pm but she keeps waking at just after 6am. And yes, we're worried about the clocks going back too! Especially as it's my brothers wedding on Saturday! Im worried that she's not getting enough sleep but she seems ok in the day. Hope the gro clock helps but as Anna said, consistency is the key!

I'll try to put him down at 6.30 today and see how it goes. I'll keep you ladies updated. Definitely being consistent is important.
Foxy are you doing anything to get DD to wake up later? Let me know how it goes on Sunday with the wedding and clock going back. I find that my DS2 is miserable and irritable around 5/6pm from being OT, so maybe an early BT might help.

Hush in, def try earlier BT, it will either help or not. If WU is the same at least he will have had a longer night YK? - then you can add in the groclock to help with WU and pull BT later once WU is a little later

HUGS! How long ago has his nap gone? It could still need some sort of nap every few days, and not having it he became OT. Anyway, since nap dropping at 3.5 yo, my DS needed 12.5-13 h A time in the day to have a good night and his night sleep consistently is of 11-11.5 h (it was more 11.5 h just after nap dropping, more toward 11 h now), so it could be that 11 h nights and 13 h days are what he needs. In this case, you would need to put him to bed later, to have a later wu.
How is his behavior when he wakes at 6 with a 7 pm bt?
Barbara

Thanks Barbara. I believe that he still needs a nap, but he goes to nursery and they don't get to nap. He's off from school for a week (half term). I'm going to get him to nap and to go bed later to see if it helps. I'm a bit nervous as to what time he's going to wake up tomorrow God willing because the clocks are going back tonight. With that being said he had a nap of 1.5 hour and I'm planning on putting him down soon.

I'll let you know what time he wakes up.

For the past 2 nights he's woken up at 3am  ??? :o :o and just wouldn't go back to sleep. Last night I put him down at 9.20pm and he refused to sleep. He kept coming over to us and he said that he was scared, even though his older brother sleeps next to him. So I slept with them. He again woke up at 3am and said that he needed to go toilet, I took him and he just couldn't go back to sleep. He eventually went down at 7 I think for an hour if not less.

I'm out of ideas as to what to do. I can't keep waking up at 3/4am and I have a baby who I'm trying to fix his habitual waking as well.
