Frozen Breast Milk
« on: October 24, 2013, 15:59:33 pm »
If breast milk changes to meet the baby's needs as she grow, why is it okay to use frozen BM 4-6 months later?

The dates are about safest storage.  Obviously the closer to the time the milk is produced the better, but it's not going to be so different a couple of months down the line that it's going to be harmful, if that makes sense.

It does make sense. Thanks Amanda.

I did get that the dates were for storage time, and that stored milk for that time is safe and not harmful, I just didn't understand how the composition of the milk for a newborn would be adequate for a 4 month old if the baby's needs nutrition wise really change.

If it's not too facile and answer, I guess it's like having whole, semi-skimmed or skimmed milk.  They're all acceptable, just that one might be preferable at a particular time, I guess.

Or you could go along the line that each day a slightly differently composed milk is produced (different antibodies etc), so is it ok to give yesterday's milk today?

Yes, breastmilk is perfect for each day it is produced, but still acceptable after that, if that makes any sense.  It's not like today you're giving oranges and in a few months time it's strawberries.  More like satsumas or something more similar to an orange (sorry, but orange knowledge isn't wonderful ;) )
