Milk substitute
« on: October 28, 2013, 08:50:51 am »
DS is currently trialling no dairy or soy because of suspected allergy causing chronic ear infections.
Our dr has given us a rice based formula to have him drink instead of milk to make sure eye gets all the nutrients that he will be missing. It tastes horrible and L is not interested at all! I asked the dr about him drinking regular rice milk but he said it has nothing nutritional in it to benefit LO.
I know many ladies here have had success with coconut milk and rice milk mixed together ??? Or is it coconut milk alone?
Could anyone give me more info regarding nutrients and so forth? Also, should I mix between the two? Are there any better options?
TIA!

I know a lot use coconut milk.

Rice milk is not recommended for under 5s as a milk substitute due to its arsenic content.

Ok so when you say coconut milk, do you mean the cream used for cooking for example curries??
Or coconut milk sold where the rice/almond/oat milk is sold??  Is it mixed with something? Or pure coconut milk? What about calcium and other vits?
What about almond milk or one of the otheer milk substitutes?

We use oat milk because a) it is enriched with calcium b) easily available c) at the time I wanted to avoid any soy or nut milks.

You need to make sure you keep his calcium intake up from other sources or a supplement, our dietician gave us one.

Anyone else use coconut milk?
I thought oat/almond milk was not fatty enough and that is why people use/mix with coconut milk??

I was lucky that Olly would devour an avocado whole so I was always happy with his fat intake  :) I did used to mix a bit of olive oil into things too.

May i tag along with this thread too please. Our lo has a cows milk allergy too and other views and advice would be very much welcomed. I worry about calcium deficciency too. At the moment we are on neocate and at 13 months old i know he cant stay on it for much longer. We have been trialling odd days on soy and he seems ok at the moment but we havent actually tried soy molk yet (too scared lol). Where do you get oat milk from and whats it called please.

So, if I give him almond milk, all I need to worry about is fat intake, right? What if I add coconut or flax oil to it? How much would I add to an 8oz milk bottle?

Also following along this thread.  My little guy has a confirmed dairy allergy, we've been giving him rice milk and almond milk here and there and he has no problems, but the pediatric allergist told me that until he was 2, he'd need to be on a toddler formula so that he can get all the fat intake he needs.  Problem is, he's always been breastfed and cannot stand the taste of formula.

Just like My Little Liam, I was wondering, those who use coconut milk, do you use the enriched kind that is near the almond/soy/rick milk (like coconut dream) or do you use the canned stuff that one would use for a curry?  Also, in what proportion would you mix the coconut milk to...say...rice or almond milk
