Standing in cot messing with naps!! Help!
« on: November 14, 2013, 18:20:40 pm »
How do you deal with this?? DD is 10 months and has recently desovered that she can pull herself up on everything!! She loves it and wants to spend all day on her feet, which is great except when i try to put her down for her naps! Its taking so long to get her to sleep that she ends up OT, im pretty sure this is a common issue!!
Yesterday i APOP and held her in my arms till she was more or less asleep and put her down and that went ok,she had a quick winge then out but today, well, i was a bit inconsistent with my aproach, i dont want her to get used to me holding her to sleep, ive never had to,she has always been a great independent sleeper, but i didnt know whether to keep laying her down and stay sat by the cot where she could see me,
lay her down stay in her room and let her cry, when she stood she could see me and was happy for a while then started crying, i tried to sooth her with my voice and when she calmed a bit i went over and led her down and left the room,
or lay her down and leave the room but before ive even got to the door shes screaming so i basically walk out then walk straight back in and because i wasnt being consistent i know this made it worse, i need a game plan before hand other wise im all over the place and that doesnt help anyone!! She eventually went down with me doing WIWO but is this the best approach? She also has a bit of a cold at the mo so i feel terrible and just want to give her extra cuddles!! She is also going through SA which seems to be lasting forever,at least a couple of months now, whahhh!!! I hope all that makes sense, how long will this last??? Thanks in advance ladies! X

Does she know how to get back down on her own? Could you practice this new skill during her A times (getting up and down)? When dd1 first learned how to pull herself up, I remember our routine went out the window for a while too  ::) (as opposed to dd2, who loved her sleep). Can't remember exactly how long though, sorry :-[.

At 10 months, she may be going through the 2-1 nap transition and may need a push in A to be tired enough to sleep rather than stand up and play. Would you be able to note what time you're putting her down?

Whenever mine were sick, I would do what it takes to help them sleep and work on independent sleep (if needed) once they were better. If she's going through SA, try spending lots of time with her (cuddling) during her A time.

WRT her getting back down, she can get down to sitting and i asume she can go from sitting to laying but ive never actually seen her do it  ??? Ive been letting her practice in her cot but i can do more!
So currently her A times are about 3h30-3h40 although ive been cutting the 2nd A time a bit shorter due to short nap, although her first nap is rarely longer than 1h30, and with her A time the length it is her 2nd nap is more of a cat nap, usually under an hour, im scared to push her A time any more!!
I will keep giving her lots of love and cuddles, although im worried about SA, she cant have people even talk to her sometimes without breaking down, lets hope this all passes!
How long do you keep laying them down before you give up and rock them?? ( for naps)
Thanks for your help! X

It's hard to recommend a time limit on trying to get her to lie down. I'd rather go by how she's reacting, particularly if she's go SA and a bit of a cold. So if she's happy and co-operative, keep it up. I noticed with LO1 at one point that he didn't know how to lie down from sitting. I was really surprised! Definitely worth practising that skill just to check she can.
