Banana aggravating reflux?
« on: November 19, 2013, 18:16:41 pm »
Hmm so we've started to give G some solids at lunchtime and she's really really enjoying them.
She's had banana twice and both afternoons has been particularly refluxy. Yesterday she had pear and was fine but Sunday and today some mashed banana and being v sick. She's hungry, really hungry but more milk and more sick.

Any ideas? Not sure if this should be CRC or here? Feel free to move. Thanks :-*

Not sure about the banana hun, but when we tried C on baby rice and then some fruit purées before 6 mo it made her reflux awful. The paed had recommended we try as he said in half of cases it will make reflux better but for the other half it will be worse! For us it was worse, so we waited until just over 6 mo and it was a little easier then.

Funnily enough though I have been getting awful heartburn every night... last night I had a banana and it really helped to calm the acid. Not sure if that was just coincidence though.

Yeah everything I read online says banana is good for reflux.

The GP,recommended we start ages ago but I've been waiting until I think she's ready. Eating around her for the last fortnight has been torture, bless her and on Sunday at MIL's she was practically diving at everyone's plates while DH held her at the table so I offered her mashed banana and she was diving forward for more and more and more. She's really enjoying them and I'm having to hold her back by only giving a tiny amount.

She was fine with the Pear yesterday which you'd think would be more acidic so I just don't know. I'm obviously not reducing milk feeds but she is hungry. I'm responding to all hunger signs and BFing her but then she's still seeming hungry. I will try her with some root veg tomorrow, carrot or sweet potato and see how we go. She's not screaming or anything just gurgling and a bit squirmy and has been noticeably spitting up a bit more but no food in it, just milk and curds.

Thanks xxx

Banana can be a funny one - DH & I are both allergic to them so I never gave DS any until he was over 12mo. It didn't seem to affect his reflux then, but he was older..

At first we just stuck to veg and slowly introduced fruit, then baby cereal, then meat & fish, then egg, then at over 12mo all the things I'd been being careful about due to family allergies. So far DS has been fine with everything (except dairy, but he's still MPI!).

If you think it's making her worse then avoid it for a month and try again  :-*

Thanks, I think I will give the carrot a try at lunchtime today and see how we get on and if she's unsettled then maybe wait a bit longer. She's having 2-3 NFs still and feeding often in the day but is so interested in eating it's difficult. Perhaps we'll have to start eating in secret away from her! ;)

Thanks again :-*

Banana was terrible for Z until later ie 8 mths ;) it can be good or bad for people depending on your digestive systems sensitivities. Both carrot and banana can constipate so maybe try carrot with something like pear x

Thanks hun! She's spitting up a bit this morning with no solids so perhaps it's just her reflux flaring a little. Maybe her dose needs adjusting?!

It is a low dose spent it...so maybe. Solids can make refux worse sometimes, even if temporarily as the gut adjusts to food in it YK? When are you offering solids. Try to avoid giving in the late arvo

She's on 2.5mls twice per day.

I've been giving her them at lunchtime just 1-2tsps so really only a small amount and she hasn't had it all anyway. She was quite refluxy this afternoon too and there was carrot in the sick too! I guess I don't really know what is normal or what to expect though? ???
DH and I are just discussing whether this increase in spit-up has only happened since Sunday or before then? I actually have no idea! ::) it could be that I'm just noticing it more because I'm looking for a reaction?

It's a very low dose...so it could be the change in adding solids has caused a flare up and the dose isn't covering it.

Remember though, PPIs don't reduce spit up just the acid. Increased spit up can be the tummies way of rejecting the food though

We're not due to see the GP until a week on Monday as she's on holiday. She's fine although we're having rubbish nights but that's more due to naps I think. Ugh!

Nic sorry I misread your post! - didn't realize the mg/ml ratio was 4:1

Please don't think I was suggesting that G wasn't ready for solids hun. That isn't what I meant at all, from the sounds of it she is showing all the signs. I just wanted to share our experience to show that in some cases any solids can make reflux flare up or be worse. For us it was baby rice mostly and C could never ever tolerate it, yet for a lot of babies that is the first and most tolerated solid. So what I was meaning was that it was likely the solids in general were causing a flare. Hope you can get sorted soon, reflux absolutely sucks!  :-*

Oh don't worry hun. You didn't say anything and anyway I am a huge fretter so am worrying enough myself that it's not right. She's not been too bothered by the last few day's offerings anyway but she's really clingy and quite fussy at the minute. Could be teething, could be flaring. She just seems so hungry ALL the time. You've probably seen my moan elsewhere but I'm just fed up and :'( tonight.

Going to load the dishwasher, chop some veg and try to get an early night. X
