Bitting during BF
« on: November 29, 2013, 09:52:52 am »
Hi All,

My DD is almost 8 months old and she has one tooth which is not even completely erupted. I started to feel extreme pain during BF and it would last a bit after the feed. At first I though that I got Candida on my nipples again, and I even though I saw a white spot in my baby's mouth so we started to get antifungal treatment. But now I realize that the pain comes from DD's tiny tooth. She doesn't bite because she is playing or done eating, but she is biting during eating/sucking. It is like she is closing her mouth too tight and during sucking she bites. I even noticed tooth marks on my nipple.
I don't even know what I can do to stop her from doing it. She doesn't take a bottle but does drink from a sippy cup. If I stop BF and only pump and give her only sippy my milk supply might go down plus I don't think she is ready to give up "booby". I really want to continue BF.
Did anyone else had a similar experience?
Thank you in advance!

Make sure she had a really wide mouth when she latches on.  If it hurts take her off and relatch her. You may find that a different hold such as a Rugby hold helps as it will move the position of the offending tooth to another area of skin.
Sometimes it is a bit uncomfortable when they get a new tooth until they have adjusted their latch to allow for the tooth.

Thank you for your reply! For a while I didn't pay attention to her latch because she fed well and there was no discomfort but I guess I should go back to basics. We also never tried any other feeding position the the regular one but I will try it. Hope fully she will get used to the new tooth.
Thank you!

^^This.

Also worth considering whether another one might be on the way.  My DD's latch always got a bit funny both before and just after a tooth erupted.

So I made sure that her mouth was open wide when she latched and it wasn't as painfull to feed her because her little tooth wasn't digging in into the same spot but it was still a bit painful in the new area. I'm afraid she is going to cut through the skin again. I guess just left to hope that she learns on her own

She will hopefully get used to her new teeth soon.  Have you tried giving any pain relief before feeding (gels or liquids etc) as I tended to find that if it didn't hurt her so much that it was so uncomfortable, if that makes sense?

No I haven't. Do you mean applying gel in the painful are?
I figured out how to latch her on the right side and it's much better but for some reason can't get a. Better latch on the left
Thank you

Yes, if you apply a topical teething pain relief it can sometimes help the latch not be quite so uncomfortable.

Orajel makes a baby version...just be extra careful and use it sparingly on a q-tip as I have used it on myself for tooth pain and accidentally swallowed it...froze the back of my tongue!
