Dream feed expressed breast milk
« on: December 31, 2013, 02:39:21 am »
I have an 8 week old. I typically only able to express 75ml from both breast. Is this enough for dream feed per night. Should I try topping it with water to get baby fuller?

How much milk is she suppose to be getting at dream feed. If I breast feed her dream feed, how long should I feed her for?

75 ml would be a smallish feed, but it might be okay for a dream feed at this age.  Amounts are tricky, especially if you're only looking to do that feed with a bottle.  When are you pumping for the feed?  Have you just started pumping?

Definitely do not give your baby water at this age, breastfed babies shouldn't get water for several more months.

I always did the dream feed straight from the breast - I would let my LOs nurse until they moved away from that steady suck-swallow pattern and into more of a comfort nursing pattern and then I would unlatch and do the other side.  Once they finished the other side, I would rub their backs a touch and put them back in bed.  It definitely didn't take longer than 20 minutes, probably closer to 10 once we got going.

I second what Erin said. BF babies shouldn't have water until 6mo when they start solids. And water has no calories so wouldn't keep her full. She needs the calories in BM to grow.

Mine took 4-5oz (120-150ml) at DF if they had a bottle. I just fed from the breast and they tended to fall back to sleep and stop actively sucking.

Can you add another pumping session at a different time in the day if you really want to DF with EBM? When are you pumping now?

I'm pumping just before  I go to bed about 9.30. Then my husband feed her at 11.00

I have the best luck pumping first thing in the morning...not that I always have time then, but I try to get up before DD3 does.

Supply is naturally lower in the evening so you night get more if you can fit in a pumping session after the morning BF if you wish to keep the bottle up.
