9 month and NWs
« on: January 12, 2014, 02:31:41 am »
So I need help with NW for my 9 month old.
I am trying at the same time to teach him to be an independent sleeper.
So until recently my Ds was having night waking Btwn 2-4 am for a full feed. Now he is getting up Btwn 11-12 am for a feed and still at 3-4 tossing and turning sucking his a pacifier a lot n I'm not sure if it's bc he's actually hungry. He is a big boy as far as height. 90th percentile but at the same time he eats a lot during day. 4- 7 ounce  bottles plus one motn bottle plus 3 meals n snacks during the day.
He has 2 1-1.5 hrs naps and is up for about 3 hours at a time between each nap. Looking through the forums I see that maybe the NW can disappear if maybe I increase a time??

New easy for him looks like this
6-630 wake up
7 bottle
8 oatmeal
9 or 930 nap for 1-1.5 hour nap
10:30-11 wake up
Bottle
12 baby food n fruit
2- nap for about 1 hr to 1.5
3 bottle
5 dinner
630 bath
730bedtime he's been falling asleep by 8 with the new teaching him to go to sleep
11-12 am wakes up n gets a full feed
2-3 wakes up has been putting himself back together but last night didn't

That scheduled has been like that for last week.
Is that ok? Can tweaking my schedule take away night waking?

Again the waking at 11pm and then again tossing and turning sucking his paci like no tomorrow which usually means he's hungry at about 3 am. I haven't been feeding him at the 3am for last 5 days hoping he stops but It seems like he wants to eat every 4 hours like he does in the day. Y is this happening? How do I stop it

Hi there!

If he is used to feeding at this time then it could just be a habit, yk? It might stop in a few days.
Are you planning to continue the 23 feed or drop that as well? Do you let him wake for that or you wake him up?

At 9m you are looking at something between 3 and 4h A time (Average A times- BOOKMARK ME! ). If he was doing (or is) only 3h A time then it might not be enough for him and he might be ready for some more A time. To answer your question, NW are often connected to A times and naps so once those are fixed NW are often gone.

He is also at an age when many babies start the 2-1 transition. This is a long process and can take quite a bit of time and ordeal but it's worth reading this link and knowing what to expect: From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)
It could be that he has started the transition, which means that A times increase and one of the naps needs to be start and shortened.

HTH :)

Hi, thanks so much for answering I was beginning to think no one would! Lol
So it's going on day 7 tonight of the 11pmish waking up for a feed.  He's not settling any other way so ok feeding him it's just so wierd bc he gets his last bottle at 7 n never use to wake up.
Since he is getting up at 11 I'm not feeding him at 2-3 bc I am not able to get up twice since I work full time and wake at 545am.  He wakes up a few times a night pulls himself up and I tell him it's time for sleep n he goes back but at about 3 am he starts sucking his pacifier intensely but I refuse to feed him so I find myself replugging his paci a few times. And then at about 5ish he won't resettle n I bring him to bed where he will sleep with me where he will sleep til 630 or 7 on the weekends.
This just all started. He was sleeping all night til 3 and back down to 6am.
Will he stop waking for this 3 am feed? Is there something I should b doing differently to stop these wakings even though he resettles he still stand and pulls himself up n wakes me. Last two nights have increase a time but still no change.
I still need help!
Thanks again

It takes about 4 days to see a difference in sleep when increasing A times, and even then you are going to see a difference only if now it's enough for him and he doesn't need another increase.
What is his A time now? And how long are naps?

If he settles when he wakes at 3AM I consider it pretty good. I know that you wake up yourself, but try and not go to him and go back to sleep. This is maybe something you will need to teach yourself as well :P Ha-ha, sleep training the parent! Don't think that's what Tracey had in mind, lol. But these things often pass after a while and perhaps the A tweaking will make it happen even sooner than it would otherwise.

Hi sorry has problems with my phone and too tired to sit in a computer :/
So his a times now vary he stays with a sitter so it's anywhere from 3-4  sometimes 5 hours in the afternoon. Most of the time he takes two good naps especially when were home during week for about 1.5 hours each .
Ur right about sleep training myself. Lol
He tosses n turn at about 3 n tries to settle himself most of the time it's his paci falling about constantly at that time bc I'm assuming he's use to drinking formula and wants it. So he sucking the paci like crazy n it falls and I find myself plugging in a few times.
My question is it's Ben a week n 3 days with no 3 am feeding when will he stop the tossing n turning or his body get use to not wanting it??

There is no manual, so I can't really tell you when is he going to stop that, every baby is different.

I am not even sure that the NW is related to him being used to be fed. I would consider strongly that it connected to his A times and to perhaps too much day sleep.

It could defo be so for some babies. Many 9m old babies start already the 2-1 transition.
