talk to me about dreamfeeds
« on: January 14, 2014, 12:26:14 pm »
so i've been "kind of" doing a DF with DD, but it's hit & miss tbh!!!sometimes DH & I both fall asleep & miss our 10.30pm DF time....sometimes it's just too hard to get out of bed so it might be 11.30pm before i drag myself out to do it....sometimes DD doesn't settle until after 9pm....sometimes it's 8pm....things are just all over the place with this DF!!!!she has been going from the DF to 5.30-6.30am ,so we are really lucky....it's definitely working & i want to keep it up, but i'm just not sure of a few things!!!

1. when is the best time to DF? is it from when LO last feeds or from when LO falls asleep?

2. i know there are different stages of sleep....sometimes, it seems like DD is in a really deep sleep & i'm afraid to DF because we have to burp afterwards, & it if we catch her at the wrong time, it can turn into a super-long NW! i want to keep up the DF for this very reason....personally, i would much rather feed at 3 or 4am & drop teh DF, but her NWs are ridiculously long so it's easier all round to do the DF!

i'll post our EASY  in case that helps....it has changed in the last few days...she has dropped the last CN, so it looks something like this:
(using yesterday as an example...)

WU: 5.45
E: 6am
A:
S: 7.20am

E: 9.30am
A
S: 11.10am

E: 1pm
A
S: 3pm

E: 4pm
A:
S: 5.30pm

E: 6.15pm
A
E: 7.15pm
S: 8.30pm

DF: 11.30pm (i apparantly refused to get up when DH came into the room to call me!!!I have a vague recollection of begging him for 10 more mins asleep!!!)

TIA o wise ones!!!xxx

I think in the book the df was about 3 hours after bedtime, I tried with E for a few nights at different times but she never took to it...would purse her lips and snuggle into my arm. Worked really well with DD2...her last feed was right before bed and the df was 3/3.5 hours later.

so you counted from the time you started the last
feed,not when she fell asleep?

I fed her to sleep....so same time! I think it is meant to be from sleep time though I suppose that depends on the baby!

hmm-see we can't feed to sleep-she really does need
to burp after a feed.
how did ye avoid it?

Popped her up on my shoulder after the feed for a bit....she still slept and burp worked its way up and out...until she was 5/6 months old this worked and then because she already self soothed for naps she got attached to a blanky and held that while sucking her thumb.

I think based on your EASY you could bring the dream feed forward to 10.30. That's what we did with our son when he was a baby.  It might be easier on you too. Our DD is 4 weeks but we haven't managed an evening routine yet.  But I plan to do a 7 pm feed and a 10.30 DF. I don't think it matters to much he doesn't stay asleep.  I  do remember that it was such a calm feed that burping was easy and sometimes he was asleep. But other times he woke and fed well.  As with everything pick a time and try to stick to it.  Good luck
(I'll probably have similar issues when I'm trying it on a few weeks with DD.  ;)

Just looking at your EASY I noticed you do your last feed at 7:15 and then she doesn't go to bed until 8:30.  Could you have the last feed at 6:15 and then put her to bed for 6:45/7?  I'm just wondering, as you mentioned it can be hard to get her settled.  It could be that's she's OT by 8:30, especially if she's been up since 5:45.
I do a cluster feed at 5:00 and 6:30, some play and activity happens in between and then he's in bed by 6:45/7 at the absolute latest.  I do a dream feed at 10pm.  I used to do it at 10:30 but DH is getting up earlier for work so I try to get to bed earlier too.

I agree about putting your little one down for bed earlier.  When we moved my son's bedtime to 7:30p, he (15 weeks) starting sleeping until 7am (with a dream feed at 10:15pm).  Athough I am hoping to drop the dream feed soon.

i never did a Df with the girls, I just waited until they would naturally wake, which would be anywhere from 4-6hrs from going to bed and then feed. I am pretty sure at this age, Jenny was working towards dropping the 4th catnap, which your lo may be doing too and you might find her going down for the night earlier and sleep longer?
