My little wee man Part II
« on: January 17, 2014, 01:00:48 am »
:(  So my wee little guy has slipped a little further down the charts and the doctor now wants us to come in every two weeks for a weigh-in.  She says he's alert, content, looks happy and healthy but she has a professional obligation to keep an eye on this.  After much discussion, and several buckets of tears from me, hubby and I have decided to give DS a bottle of formula each day to see if that helps to get his weight up.  I know it's not an end-of-the-world scenario.  So many moms choose to, or have to, formula feed but I'm just not happy about it.
I've been taking Fenugreek for about three weeks now and I did notice an increase in my supply but clearly he's just not getting enough.  I feel like I'm letting him down or doing some damage by introducing formula.  I know I'm being silly but I just thought I'd add a follow up to my earlier post.  If anyone has any advice, BTDT stories etc. it would be lovely to hear about it.   :'(

(((Hugs))) how old is your little guy now? Do you know if they are charting him on charts meant for ebf babies? DD3 is a teeny tiny thing, gained a ton in the first couple months and now has tapered off but according to this it is perfectly normal for an ebf baby:

That is definitely what happened with my DS but I've noticed in the last week that he's really hungry at the 5 and 6 o'clock feeds and my breasts can't keep up.  He's in the 90th percentile for height and 10th for weight.  I've given birth to a string bean!  I did the formula at 5 and the BF at 6 and he seemed happy and full so I guess that's good.  If we get the thumbs up from the doctor in two weeks then I guess we'll keep at it.  If not, maybe it's time for solids...?

I wouldnt jump for solids...bm or formula is where they need to get there nutritional needs met before one year and if he fills up on solids it may be detrimental to his milk feeds. Does he take after you or your dh? That is one thing here...dh and I are both short (5'3" & 5'2" respectively) so we make tiny kids! DD3 gets frustrated at the evening feeds because my letdown is slower, though tonight I managed to get an extra feed in (she is on some nasty abx and they are giving her a tummy ache).

Both my hubby and I are long and lean (5'11 & 5'10 respectively  :D) folk, so neither of us are surprised he's not big but we weren't really expecting him to be so small as to warrant concern from the the doctor.  My mom made a good point when she said sometimes it seems like we're given too much information today.  She never knew my, or my sisters, percentiles or weight, just that we were happy, healthy and growing.  When she couldn't keep up with our food needs she gradually introduced solids, though she did say she was certain it wasn't until we were 6 months.  I suppose this is when the momma instincts have to take precedent over everything else...
Is ABX anti-reflux?

Antibiotics - she was exposed to whooping cough and is on a preventative dose as she has only had one vax so far. Nasty tasting stuff! I purposely dont pay attention when the health nurse plots her chart (or my older kids bmi) because I go by my gut. I know they have to do it, I just smile and nod when they tell me (unless of course it was a severe drop but I think I would have other indications there was an issue yk?) and the one health nurse we usually see is good with that!

YIPES!  Whooping cough already?!  That's pretty scary.  I hope that passes us by, we're up for our 6 month vaccinations in February which should give us the second batch I think?
At any rate, thank you MasynSpencerElliotte, you've been a big help!

Here in Sask they do that one at 2, 4, 6, & 18 months and 4 years...not sure if BC is the same though. DH and I were vaxed for it too when she had her first shots so hopefully some immunity is coming through my milk!

Woo hoo, he hit 15lbs 11oz!  He's in the 25th percentile.  Much better  :)
