Fussy towards end of feed
« on: January 20, 2014, 21:47:13 pm »
DS is 5 weeks old and takes between 3-4oz every three hours. He feeds well to start with, but then after about 2oz he starts to fuss and I am not sure what causes this. He kind of grunts and shakes his head from side to side and acts as if he is frustrated. I usually try to wind him when this happens but he carries on with the wriggling, grunting and rubbing his face into me and rarely burps.

My DD had silent reflux but I really don't think this is the case with DS. He doesn't cry or arch his back or object to being laid down. So does this sound like wind? Or maybe DS needs a bigger teat size? Any ideas? It is starting to effect the amount he takes now and today I have struggled to get him past the 2oz mark of his feeds.

Probably needs a faster nipple.  DD2 did exactly the same thing when it wasnt fast enough!

Hugs Hun, you could try a variable teat if the faster one doesn't help and see if it makes a difference?
Otherwise could be wind. Have you tried taking him off the bottle, then winding and trying again?

I would try a faster teat or a variflow teat as Sara suggested (but not if you have Avent bottles as they will be too fast!). If that doesn't help then I would think silent reflux could be a possibility and you may find that other symptoms start to creep in (hopefully not though!)

Thanks for the replies. I really hope this isn't the start of silent reflux. DS is so happy though and rarely cries unless really hungry, so no sign of it yet. Last night DS was passing a lot of wind in the night, so I do wonder if it is that bothering him. I thought about trying gripe water Aishi, thanks will give it a go.

Sara I do try to burp him and I can hardly ever get any up. Interestingly though this morning I did manage to get him to do a huge burp and he settled back down and drained the 4oz bottle with no fussing or grunting. So it does look like wind could be the issue. Will see how the gripe water works and if not try a faster teat I think.
