Why?
« on: January 23, 2014, 21:01:43 pm »
Just a quick question whilst I'm trying to analyse the next move to make with my LO

But why does he wake at the 30/40 min mark during his naps and fuss/cry? But at night I don't hear a peep so he obviously gets himself through coming into the lighter sleep?

he is a terrible napper at the minute so trying a few things to try to improve it but just wondered this! it may help me understand him a bit better :-)

Thanks
Lauren

How old is he?  Day sleep and night sleep are different skills to learn so even though he can get himself back to sleep at night he probably hasn't figured it out in the day yet.  My DD was the same way - crappy naps for a while but wonderful 12hr nights!

He's 15 weeks do hoping these days will be getting better soon as he's nearly at that 4 month mark.

I'd of thought sleep was sleep - ha! So thanks for the explanation, still one feed a night but over the lady week he goes back to sleep without his fummy, and a few times I've heard him wake but put himself back to sleep early morning! So he is defo getting the hang of night skeeo! Fingers crossed for day sleep soon as it's getting beyond a joke!!!

Also, the 30-40 minute mark are babys sleep cycles. Adults switch between sleep cycles every hour or so, but babys are much shorter. OT baby means they cant easily resettle into the next lighter sleep cycle after the first.

^^ Yes, but it's not always a sign of OT.

From 3-6 mos, babies are learning how to organise daytime sleep and many of them hit a bump with daytime sleep transitions.  You may consider intervening to assist him in learning how to transition between sleep phases. Have a look here:
