I hope it works out, that would be quite distressing to watch LO banging their head hard enough to get a bruise. I was going to ask if M could sleep in the crib with E until she goes back to sleep that way E is always in her own bed so would just have to transition from M being there to not being there. I did this with DS off and on for awhile when he was having problems sleeping.

Final update - after four nights with the Groclock E slept through til 7am (had to be woken up), mum and dad have had their first proper nights' sleep in six months, and big brother can go back into his bed (they share a room). Turns out she just didn't know what time it was when she woke up. Groclock works its magic again!
