10 weeks old - short naps
« on: February 06, 2014, 02:43:13 am »
Hi,

My daughter is 10 weeks now and has been sleeping only 30min per nap since she was about 3 weeks. I would like to get her to sleep longer but I never succeed. Even if I nap with her (sometimes I need to rest too!!), she'll stay in a light sleep for longer (say total nap of about 45min), but she seems to never be able to fall into deeper sleep again. She falls asleep in her bed while I shhh and with a pacifier and has been doing so for about a month now. In takes only about 5min now for her to fall asleep. Her routine looks like this:
Wake at 7:30
Play until 8:30
Sleep 8:30-9
Play until 10:30
Sleep 10:30-11
and so on until the last nap at 5:30 then its off to bed in between 7 and 7:30. Her play time will vary from 1h to 1.5h. She usually takes 5 naps a day if we stay at home. She might sleep longer if were out and about and she is sleeping in her car seat/stroller.
I feed her throughout the day whenever she asks for it (but never just before a nap). I would like to get her on EASY but her napping schedule is so all over the place... She isnt usually fussy when its time to nap and she is quite easy to put to sleep.

I am trying the shh/pat to extend her naps, but so far no success. I get her to sleep again but she never reaches that deeper sleep and simply doses off for 5-15min and eventually just jolts awake, allthough I dont stop ushing. I am thinking she is simply not able yet to sleep longer (especially that she wont sleep any longer when I am sleeping with her). Anyone has had this problem ? Is it just that she is not able yet to sleep longer and it should come in due time ? (she is still so young :)) Or should I keep trying hard ?

Thank you,

I think you probably need to start increasing her A time so that she is tired enough to take a good nap.  Have a look at the average A time link Average A times- BOOKMARK ME!   At 10wo I would think your LO should be working up to 1hr20min or 1hr30min for all her A times.  I woukd start by increasing that first A time to 1hr15min instead of 1hr, hold it for a few days, then increase again if she still isnt doing a good nap.  What do you think?
