What is considered STTN at 4months?
« on: February 16, 2014, 20:51:15 pm »
Hi everyone

What is considered sleeping through the night for a 4 month old?

On good nights my DS will sleep 7-8hrs in a row (till 3-4am), then I feed him, then he goes down for another 2-3 hours.

Do I need to cut out that 3-4am feed?

No, that sounds fabulous for his age! My DS was on two night feeds at that point and only slept through with no feeds around 11 months.

I think the risk of cutting the 3am feed is that he wakes, say, a little later at 5am but is then up for the day! I think one night feed is v good at 4mo. One thing you can TRY is a dream feed at 10 or 11 to try and get the 7 or 8 hours to line up with your night sleep but this doesn't always work! Xx

Sleeping through is considered to be 5hrs+ so he is doing great. I don't know how you are feeding but if breastfeeding then one NF at this age is really good. and even if you are FF he is still right in track. There is a growth spurt around 4mo so if he hasn't had that yet he may even start waking more at night for another feed. That is totally normal too. After the GS he will probably drop that last feed on his own when he is ready without you needing to actively wean it.

If you do want to try to push the feed later you could try a DF around 10.30pm and see if he will do his long stretch after that but as pp says he is doing well so you might want to just leave well enough alone ;)

Thanks everyone! It is so encouraging to know we are on the right track  :)

Again, that is a good night, have had a couple this week where he also wakes at 10pm, so I think he may be in a GS.  I havent been doing a dreamfeed, but have been "tanking up" and feeding at 5pm and 7pm, bedtime is 7:30.
