Yellow runny and mucoussy ???
« on: February 17, 2014, 16:48:08 pm »
C is CMPI, he's 16mo and we have been reintroducing very very slowly. The only thing different he's eaten this week is biscuits which have skimmed milk powder in them. He hasn't had these specific ones before but has had food with skimmed milk powder before. He last had one of those biscuits yesterday morning. He had also eaten quite a lot of fruit up until Saturday too.

The last 3 days his bowels have been very loose - yesterday and today being the worst. His bum is very sore because of the amount of dirty nappies. It's very runny and yellow - like newborn poo? Sorry TMI?

Does it sound like the biscuits? Luckily we have a dietician appointment tomorrow anyway but tbh I get more help and advice here than from her :o

Anyone? I have a feeling it is the biscuits but wondered if anyone had any ideas? We've not really had any dairy 'accidents' so not sure how he would react?

I am not sure what CMPI is, but doesn't too much fruit produce that reaction? I know we have to watch DS with how much he eats (we call him 'fruit-bat'). If he didn't seem to be crampy, I would wait a few days and try something with powdered milk again, but watch his fruit intake in the meantime. If there is no reaction it could be something else in the biscuit.

No experience with children, Kelly, but I'm dairy intolerant myself and I do find skimmed milk powder can have quite an effect. Not in a good way. Poor little C, hope he's feeling better.

But he has had skimmed milk powder before with no reaction?? How much did he have in the run up to this episode? It can accumulate.

Teething can also cause tummy upsets as the mouth produces acid. Again too much fruit... Olly couldn't eat much fructose till recently as it gave him awful NWs.

I have completely stopped the biscuits. He had been having 1 or 2 per day for maybe 2/3 days - I honestly think it was the biscuits. The fruit he had been mostly eating this week is blueberries and they were making his poo dark and a little loose so I eased off but this is pale yellow and has mucoussy bits?

I wonder how long it will take to leave his system? I feel so bad :'( I gave him the biscuits! Damn! Now I'm going back to square one for him 100% dairy free!

Ok so we've seen the dietician. She said it defo sounds like it was the skimmed milk powder. She suggested 100% dairy free for 3 months and then try again but not skimmed milk powder, trace milk in another form?

Bowel movement this morning was still soft but normal colour and no mucous so the worst seems to have passed :) thank goodness :)

Dietician did say that he is quite young anyway (16mo) and it could be another year at least before he can tolerate any dairy but she also said that 99% of her patients have grown out of the intolerance by the time they were 4 so I'm hoping he will but if not, it's not the end of the world.

Fruit has never upset C's tummy before but today he's had lots of dirty nappies and his bum is red raw. He won't even sleep :( I'm sat here next to his cot with my hand on his tummy and he's just crying :(

What do you think it is??  Any ideas or are you just too freaked out to think straight (I probably would be!)?

I think he's quite sensitive after his little dairy incident this week and I've given him too much fruit yesterday/today and it's caused loose bowels and the poos have made his bum so sore.

I've been trying to get him to sleep for over an hour :(

We were up all night! He has had 10 dirty nappies between 11.30pm last night and 9am this morning.

His bum is red raw :( I wonder whether it is defo something he's eaten? Could this be teeth? I think his canines are moving up but I can't be sure?

He's going to his grandparents today (his dad will be there from tomorrow) until Monday :( I need him to be ok!!

I found teeth to be a problem with my two, for certain, so it could maybe be that. Poor little guy :(  I hope the bum cream works wonders for him (we were told to use a bit of cortate on DD under the diaper cream when it got really raw - cleared it overnight and that he is feeling well for his visit and you can get some rest!

Oh Kelly, the poor wee lad and his poor bottom! I'm sure you've got tons of sudocreme and all that, it really works miracles.  Was he any better at departure time for his grandparents?

it does sounds like something he ate to me.  Would teeth do that? 10 nappies in that short time?

I also think it was food but maybe teeth too? This has happened twice in one week? He had stopped pooing and his bum was looking a little better when I dropped him off. His gran have him some naked bum time and put cream on before bed so hopefully he will be better by tomorrow :)

I'm so worried about his food/intolerance. He hasn't had dairy since Sunday - what could have caused this??

Could it be a bit of a bug?? I don't think that a bit of skimmed milk in a biscuit (especially if he was already having skimmed milk in other things) would cause that violent a reaction? How much milk was he having previous to these biscuits?

I wondered about a bug but he was totally fine except the diarrhoea. He definitely had discomfort and A LOT of wind as well but no sick ness?

I've been thinking about the skimmed milk powder and I'm worried because I can't remember exactly whether he has had it before :( he hasn't been having much milk, trace amounts really like the oven chips we have include milk or the breadcrumb coating on the fish fingers and maybe only twice a week? I thought he had skimmed milk powder but I can't remember what in so I can't be sure?

In that case it could well be the milk. That's a shame  :P he is on soy though isn't he?? I don't find it too hard with all the other alternatives. And of course when he is so young you can take your own food anywhere and no one says anything. Even at 4 if I explain Olly's allergies restaurants etc don;t mind you taking your own foods. Sorry waffling a bit  ::)

Did the dietician give you the plan for re-introducing foods and the lists of foods at each level?

Yes I have the complete re introduction procedure. After last week she has advised me to go back to 100% dairy free for 3 months and then reintroduce - starting at stage 1 again.

He is fine with soy so that's ok. I'm ok with it, there's so many alternatives to dairy anyway. He's at his grandparents this weekend but his gran is dairy free anyway so knows all about it.

I feel terrible for giving him the biscuits, I'm put off trying anything again!

I wonder what the percentage is for kids who grow out of it?

High!!  Olly had a full on allergy from when he came out the womb but is on about stage 4 now and just started eating fromage frais last week  ;D ;D

Don't feel bad about trying the biscuits. How are you to know otherwise? One day he WON'T have a reaction and you will feel over the moon!

Olly has just turned 4 so it has been an age  :) still wheat and egg to go  ::)  intolerances are 'easier' to grow out of though I would have thought. You will get there x

What's the main differences between intolerance and allergy? The reaction?

C's paed always said allergy but dietician and HV say intolerance.

I know it's not a serious allergy like some kids I have worked with who have epipens so just assumed it was an intolerance but I'm not entirely sure of the differences?

Jumping in late to this but all my DD's are MPI (DD2 was dairy free until 5 years old). Intolerances have less acute symptoms than an allergy - gut/bowel issues, ezcema, sometimes behavioural and may take longer to show up where an allergy would be fairly quick - hives, vomitting, swelling etc.

Poor C, sounds rough on his bottom! DD2 always had severe constipation from dairy but DD1 & 3 tended toward loose/mucousy stools and all 3 had ezcema.

Something to google as it is complicated!! I think the difference is mainly the way that the body reacts to the 'foreign body'.

Allergy is an immune response. Intolerance is a digestive response. But, the two cross paths a lot, and some kids have both responses ;)

Thanks guys - seems it is an intolerance. His symptoms are severe diarrhoea (as I have recently found out) A LOT of wind and general tummy discomfort. It did seem to be accumulated over a few biscuits but very small amounts.

Yes I have been using Metanium - it would still be bleeding if I hadn't. His bum is much better and his poos are more solid but still soft. No mucous though (sorry TMI).

And absolutely no milk since the biscuits? Anything else new in his diet?

Could be that his intestines are still healing - it can a little while.

No milk at all. He had lots of fruit but hadn't seemed to react like that to fruit before? He seems quite sensitive to fruit recently but would that just happen at 17mo?

Ok so he's OT today due to NW's and short nap but he's also upset - he's been crying on and off and I put it down to OT but he's just done a small poo on my carpet which was pretty bright yellow, I quickly put a nappy on him and since then he has been trying to pass more but nothing has happened? I have a feeling it's going to be mucoussy like yesterday's? He's definitely in some discomfort but it may also be teeth? I can't tell? It's so hard :(

Hun t couldn't tolerate fructose and now he is much better with a bit of fruit. I wonder if when Cs gut is irritated and a bit sore fruit just doesn't agree, the sugars in some fruit can be hard on the digestive system.

Could probiotics be of help, if he's not already on them? Poor little guy.

He's not - I should get some! Poor wee man had another poo before bed, not too bad but only small so he's been really unsettled, I think he isn't finished! I've medicated because I think his teeth are really bothering him as well!

Sara - just out of interest - what fruit did T react to? All fruit? Which fruits are worse?

Fruits high in fructose were a problem.
http://ibs.about.com/od/symptomsofib1/a/fructose.htm I find now T can tolerate a little fructose but when he isn't settled or having tummy trouble they make him much worse.

I find bananas good, blueberries too

Hugs poor wee man - t is teething and fussy too and remember teething causes reflux flares and can upset the balance of the gut

I think the grapes may have been a problem.

I have bananas and blueberries just now so hopefully they're ok. If anything bananas tend to make him a little constipated.

I will keep an eye on this, it defo seems to be affecting him
