Phasing out DF?
« on: February 18, 2014, 03:30:08 am »
Hi ladies,

I think there's a dream feed forum around here somewhere but darned if I can find it!
My DS is 6.5 months old and he is having solids once a day but the rest of the time he's EBT with the exception of his bedtime bottle which is a formula/BM combo.
I think he's ready to phase out the dream feed because he only drinks off one side at 10:30pm and he's been sleeping through the night since he was 2 months old.  The only reason I hesitate removing it is because he's a bit of string bean.  He's in the 90th percentile for height but only 25 percentile for height.  We're not really worried but I don't want him to lose weight.  Do you think if I start giving him a decent size bottle of BM/formula mid-day, as well as the bedtime feed that it would top him up enough during the day to see him through?

Cheers!

It might...but then again DD3 has 2 bottles of formula a day in addition to bf and has one nf usually so no guarantee. She never took a df though! DD2did but I swapped it for a bottle feed and slowly reduced the oz. Have you ever left him to sleep past the df or does he wake anyways?

I've never let him sleep through it before, I so enjoy my sleep!  I guess I'll have to take the plunge at some point.  Also, it's always been me who's done the DF so DS has never had a bottle for it.  I tried two weeks ago and I ended up putting him on the boob because he was waking up, trying to figure out what was going on.

"How do I implement/drop the dreamfeed?"

that is the faq on the df. Have a look and see what you think.

I phased out the dreamfeed just short of 7 months, as DD started waking up when I fed her, and she was only taking 1-2oz anyway. So I started making sure she took that extra 1-2oz during the day. With breastfeeding it's obviously more difficult to know how DS is taking. Maybe just try it one night and see what happens? You can always add it back the next night. Or if that feels too daunting, you could time how long he's breastfeeding for the DF on a normal night, and shorten by a minute every few nights until he's only BF for 1-2 minutes, and then stop the DF?

That's what's driving this decision right now, I know he really isn't taking very much at all and he's always so sound asleep when I go in the last several nights.  Well....I guess I'll give it a try tonight!  :o ;D  Also thanks for the FAQ link on the dream feed, very helpful!

We did it!!!  I had to fully commit at 8pm because I decided to pump so I wouldn't be in agony in the morning and to build up a supply.  I was such a nervous wreck before bed but he just kept on sleeping.  Whew!  Now let's see if that keeps up.
We managed to get him to have some yams at 5pm and then a full 8oz bottle at 6:45, though my husband said if there had been more DS probably would have drank it.  Guess we'll try 9oz tonight.  ;D
It is a little bitter sweet though.  Even though it was a bit of a pain in terms of having to be home by 10pm each night, I loved doing the dream feed!  Sigh...oh well, we'll just have to have more babies!

Lol! Yeah I was kind of sad DD3 didnt take a df as it was a nice feed for my other two (and not the same as being woken in the motn!).
