Transition from cot query.
« on: February 20, 2014, 14:14:26 pm »
E is currently still in her cotbed at home with the sides on. When she's OT/OS she sometimes makes an attempt to climb out but is unable to do so. I had planned to leave her in her cot for a while longer and transition to the bed as we neared potty training.

E stayed with my sister last night in her travel cot. She has always slept brilliantly in the travel cot, but it has got too small for her really. My sister said that she kept trying to climb out and was very close to succeeding, so she had to stay with her until E fell asleep to be sure she was safe.

We travel and visit family and friends quite a lot so where E sleeps is quite an issue. Do you think it's feasible to move her to a bed or some other toddler sleep solution when we are visiting others and keep her in her cot at home or would this cause more tantrums than it's worth?

We sometimes take E to places where there isn't a spare bed, are there any sleeping beds/blow up mattress solutions that have really helped? I may post on product recommendations about this too but any ideas would be gratefully received.

I just bought one of these for when we travel. It's meant to be okay to use up to the age of four, although I suppose it could be tipped over.

I think it's completely feasible to do use a big bed when away and a crib at home. It's just like any other unique sleeping situation that happens when traveling. I have been researching toddler travel bed options recently, and these two are the two I've been liking the most....

This one is the one we are leaning towards, it's nice and inexpensive and the reviews are decent.

The one linked isn't the exact one I'm looking at it, but it's the same idea. For some reason, this one is significantly more expensive than the one I'm looking at in store.

Thanks :)

I like the look of that camp bed style one, it is inexpensive and seems quite like a travel cot to fold etc. it wod be easy to put in the car I think
I'm not sure E would sleep in a tent style bed - I think she might feel it's a bit too enclosed, she likes to "read" in her cot and this might not be light enough. But I have to say I like the fact she's be safe in their even in a house without stairgate.

I like the second one you posted too Stephanie, but it is expensive (at least in the US anyway I've not looked on UK site yet) and it would be quite a risk if she never slept in it.

Food for thought :)

My friend had her Ds in a cot at home but on a mattress/in a bed when they travelled (a lot) until he transitioned to bbb at home as well.  Worked fine for them but I guess it depends on your lo's temperament and how they sleep. What does your gut say about how e would handle two different ways?

My gut says she might be ok, she has on a couple of occasions refused to nap and then at the last minute laid down on mine and DH's bed and been out for the count for two hours. So in an unfamiliar environment she might well be fine. And I suppose if it started to cause trouble at home we could transition there too.

I'd go for it then! Could even help the transition at home to do it gradually like this.

I was thinking about something like this for DS:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7390043.htm#pdpFullProductInformation

That said, he slept fine in a (fenced in) single bed on holiday last August, and will sleep in a single when we visit my mum next month! Mum has hard tiled floors so I've asked for the mattress to be put on the floor  :)

When we visit MIL I'll need to get something, as I don't think DS will fit in the travel cot anymore, and he has to be in the same room as us as MIL only has 2 bedrooms!

DS has always adapted to different sleeping arrangements when away and been fine back in his own cotbed once we get home again, so I'm sure E will be fine too  :-*

I definitely wouldn't keep her in the travel cot if she's nearly climbing out though  :o

that looks great Hedgehog, think we may try one of those. M will be moving out of her cot in May and we then go to MIL's in July and I don;t think putting her into her quite high double bed is the best option....this might work x

When we were on holiday last summer (r had just turned 2), she flatly refused to sleep
In the travel cot. She was sharing a room with her sister and wanted to sleep In the other bed 2 singles in te room) she was already in a cot bed, sidr down at home so we had the single bed pushed up aghast a wall with the travel cot pushed up against the other side acting as a bed guard and put a lead of cushions in gbe Travel cot incase she decided it might be fun to climb in. Worked a treat!

She did at that age sleep in a travel cot if we were off visiting but now at 2.5 Flatt refuses to!

I know quite a few people who have used the ready bed that hedgehog posted about and it worked well for them! Just told kids it was a special treat to use when away and they went back to cot at home. Hope you find something that works for you x

We had one of the beds HH linked and it wasn't great for my wriggly sleeper. He just rolled out of the covers and got very cold.  Instead I think we ended up with either a single bed plus guard rail, or a mattress on the floor.

Just something to consider for those los who like to move around a lot in their sleep!
