Where have all the tadpoles gone?
« on: March 23, 2014, 17:55:41 pm »
Hi

We've made a little pond in our garden as I thought it'd be fun for DD to watch the tadpoles hatch and change into frogs. Got the pond ready - read up on keeping tadpoles. Went out to DGP's to collect some frog spawn but they didn't have any. So we went to a local nature reserve where they have bath tubs usually full of tadpoles and also a large pond. They didn't have any either! Not one tadpole or even froglet!
It's late March - surely there's usually some around this time of year??

Our frogs spawned a couple of weeks ago - it did feel a bit early but it was a lovely day. As is now traditional, we have a goldfish bowl of them in our dining room. It definitely makes them develop quicker!

Thanks! :) but no not really! I just can't believe they've all gone before April has even got here. Bit disappointed as was looking forward to seeing DD watch them grow and change and feed them lettuce.

I was just reading up on tadpoles and apparently they love boiled lettuce! Boil it for about 10 mins then tear it up into small pieces. Put into an ice cube tray and into the freezer. Just pop a few bits into the pond every day. Stops them eating each other if they can't find other food. Or yeah - they eat meat.

How weird! We have lots of pondweed and they seem to be OK with that - for the moment.
