extending A
« on: May 23, 2014, 08:53:56 am »
Hi, my 8 month old has about 2 A in the morning and then sleeps for 1h20, which affects her naps later in the day (3 nap). As soon as I tried to extend her A to enable her to sleep longer (Ive tried to do it over 3 days extending 15 min every day)and then maybe start switching to 2 naps a day she only sleep for 1h. I'm worried that  I will not be able to extend to 3 h. She wakes up at 5;30 every day and goes to bed at 6:30 very tired.  She still does 3 naps as I was unable to extend for ages now.
5:30-6:00 WU, EBF
8:15 bed
9:30 awake
10:00 EBF
11:00 lunch
12:00 naps for 45min
3:15 catnap 45 min
6:30 bed very cranky

This is crazy.

Did you extend her each A time every day for 3 days?

The way I always did it was extend the morning A by 15min, hold it for 3 days, then extend by 15min more if I needed to in order to get a good nap.  Extending every A time by 15min every day for 3 days will just make her overtired :(  once you get a good morning nap, you can work on extending the second A time to get a good afternoon nap.  You can cut the catnap as short as 15-20min until she has her A time long enough to drop it completely :)

OK, I get it now, I will try to slow down. Just one more question: she keeps waking up around 5:30 every morning so her bed time is around 6:30 as she gets very tired by this time. Do you think once Ive managed to extend her A to 3h she will start waking up a bit later? Otherwise it is such a long day for her and with waking up at 5;30 even with both A's at 3 h she will still need short catnap if I want to make her bed time ideally at 7.
Another thing: today she had 2h40 min first A and slept for 1h20 min, but then she had second A at 2h50 and woke up at 37min, does it mean that she was OT or UT shall I try longer second A?

I would hold those A times (1hr40min then 1hr50min) for another couple days to see if the second nap gets any better.  If she is used to 2hr A, the 37min nap may have been ot.

It is very possible that once the third nap is gone she will start sleeping longer in the am...I've got my fingers crossed for you  ;)

The reason for second A too long was that it took her over 30 min to fall asleep, she was enjoying her time in the cot by completely trashing it  :D. Does it mean that she was not tired enough though? I made sure that she had proper wind down, but what amazes me is that as soon as she is in her cot she gets so excited and never looks like she is actually going to sleep, despite of wind down routine.

She may need longer second A time then, if it was difficult to settle her for that second nap.  Maybe keep the first A the same because you are getting an ok nap, and Iincrease second A to try to get a better second nap.

She had good naps yesterday 1.15 and 1.10 so decided to ditch CN despite 4 h to BT (6:30 asleep), but she got overtired and she woke up at 5 o'clock today (ouch). So here we go again ... Mummy is grumpy today.

Ok 2 naps totaling 2h 20, but it was only 1 o'clock so I decided CN would be a good idea, but LO screamed for 45m and then 1h in the car with no result so what time BT. Even if I make it 6 it's still over 5 H since her last nap and then what? Another early WU?

If my LOs refused a nap I would just get them up and try again in 1hr.

So you couldnt get a cn out of her?  What time was bed?

Sounds like you need to increase A time before am nap and between naps to get two good naps.  Maybe increase by another15min for a couple days?  If she tries to refuse cn tthen get her up and try again in 1hr :)

I got two decent naps yesterday (both 1h20) and squeezed cat nap in as too long until BD and she still woke up today at 5. What else can I do?
wake to sleep doesn't work.

Honestly catnap messed up the day for us although it is advisable to take it slow we just ditched in an increased A time at around 5.5 months, but my LO needs a long A time to get a decent nap so it wasnt too much of an issue. How long is the catnap, alternatively you can cap that to 30 mins or even 20.

do you think my issue now is that CN is too long?
What can I do to make sleep longer in the morning?
I have already increased her A times.
She slept better or at least until 6 when she was on 2h A.

It might be messing up the day, i also agree with Tinkerbell that the first A time can be shifted a little more. What are your A times now? Honestly i found that there isnt just one thing that works for all, it is at times just trial and error until you crack it.
