5mo (low sleeping needs) routine needs adjusting
« on: May 26, 2014, 10:23:08 am »
Dears

my DS (5months+1week) has ever since low sleeping needs I think and I need some help with adjusting his EASY so he sleeps until 7...

He is on 4hr EASY since he was 3.5. He's a big child since birth (4350g at birth and 9.9kg at 5m). He eats a lot (EBF) but we dropped DF at 4.5m since he took less and less and started waking up in the middle of DF which ruined our nights. He seems to tolerate that quite well and needed only 1 NF since then. He can eat up to 1.2L of milk in these 4 feeds!!!

He started STTN when he was 10 weeks old and is an IS. He generally has no problem with falling asleep for naps, but it always took him long to fall asleep in the evening (we had the same wind down as for naps, but recently I started adding a short BT story before putting him to bed). With his activity getting longer we started dropping CN or giving him only 15mins until 17h45 max so he can fall asleep until 20h15. Dropping CN usually means that he’s OT and falls asleep while BT feed very early so he wakes up early as well and on the other hand CN means he can’t fall asleep for 30-40mins being joyful in bed (while before bath he seemed already tired).

His average sleep per day since birth:
1st month: 15h
2nd month: 14h15
3rd month: 15h (10.5h-11hrs NS)
4th month: 14-14.5h (10.5-11hrs NS)
5th month: 14h (10.25hrs NS)
6th month: 12.5-13.5h (9.5-10hrs NS)

His day recently has 3 scenarios:
Scenario 1:
WU 5/6AM (if 5Am then usually 30-40min more of sleep
E 7AM
A 3hrs
S 9 – 9.30
E 11
A 3.5hrs
S 13-14.30
E 15
A 3hrs
S 17.30-17.45
A 2.5hrs
BT 20.15

Scenario 2:
WU 5/6AM (if 5Am then usually 30-40min more of sleep)
E 7AM
A 3hrs
S 9 – 10.30
E 11
A 3hrs
S 13.30-14.30
E 15
A 4.75h
E 18.30
BT 19

Scenario 3:
WU 6.30AM
E 7AM
A 3hrs
S 9.30 – 11 (with a break after 30min to fight for longer nap – 30min)
E 11.30
A 3hrs
S 14-16
E 16
A 4hrs
E 19
BT 20

Problems:
1. I can’t make his daily routines similar each day. Everything depends on what time he WU and how long his first nap is. I try each time to extend his 1st nap if he wakes up after 1st cycle (30min) but doesn’t always work :(
2. he wakes up often around 5 or 6 (even if DF) and is cooing for 40min and then starts to grumble. We never go to him until he sounds as he can't make it on his own. If it's 5AM wake up we try to put him back to sleep around 5.40. It sometimes works after 20mim but usually after 40. So he then has only a short nap until 7AM feed (we never feed or start activity before 7AM). How do you think his EASY should look like to adapt to his sleep needs of 10hrs at night and 2-3hrs during the day? Should I try to give him 15-30mins CN round 18 and then move BT by 1hr to 20.30?

Please advise :)

Bumping for Gosia as i know she has a rough time right now.

Her DS is ultra sweet:) but really hard to read. And she started weaning the paci off so as you can imagine, some crying involved:(.

Hi there, sorry you haven't had anyone else step in yet.

I think my first thought would be that I wouldn't necessarily assume he is *that* low sleep needs.  I know that many people do feel their LO doesn't need/get much sleep, but given that he has a long day of 13-14h combined with above average A times (sometimes very long!) and nights shorter than 10h I would generally advise to make tweaks to the routine to rule out overtiredness first.  I know that DD at that age would often have deliriously happy early wakings, but actually she was very very OT and the adrenaline was just making her somewhat giddy ::)

That said, it isn't impossible that he's ready to drop his catnap, or at least start the process.  What I would suggest is probably that you aim for a 3h first A time from the time he actually wake to start the day.  If the nap is good, do 3h for his next A time.  If that nap is also good, and finishes after 3pm, then skip the catnap and have him in bed for the night 3h after that nap finishes.  So an example day could be:

WU 6.30
Nap 9.30-11
Nap 2-3.30
BT 6.30

If the first nap is bad, try a shorter second A time e.g. 2.5h or so which may actually get you a longer nap e.g.

WU 6.30
Nap 9.30-10
Nap 12.30-2.30
Catnap 4.30-5
BT 6.30/7 (keep the day to a maximum 12.5-13h)

If both naps are bad you'll definitely need a 3rd nap but again try not to let it go on too long and maybe even bring BT as early as 6pm.

Nap transitions are always a time of going backwards and forwards between different routines, and it can be quite frustrating.  Early bedtime is your friend ;). Have you also read this? All about the 3-2 transition- 5/6 months

Thanks Katherine!

I'll start with 3hr A time today! We're now on paci weaning mission at the same time (day 3). I don't know if it helped but today he slept 10h40m which I haven't seen for quite some time! at least I know he's not tired after night.

Let's see how today goes! :)

keeping FX for you as well :)
