7.5 months and trouble with savoury food
« on: June 19, 2014, 19:20:35 pm »
Hi :)

I've been weaning since about 5 months now. Started on carrot (refused), pumpkin (refused), sweet potato (ok), parsnips (not bad), baby rice (ok), fruit (YES). I had tried all the Annabel Karmel recipies where i only really had success when i put some apple in instead of another ingredient.
Then i made the mistake of buying stage 1 Ellas kitchen. Oh she loves this fruit mush. She will now not touch stage 2.

She takes bits of toast, strawberries, chews on carrots, eats musli in her pear puree so i'm sure it's not to do with the texture..
I'm not entirely sure what to do as she's refusing meal times!

Should i make some veg purees with apple and then gradually reduce the apple? I don't want her to keep this sweet tooth! Or maybe adding apple to all these pouches i bought?

I would be so grateful for some help, i'm terrified she's not getting enough nutrients!!  ??? (she's drinking about 900-1000ml formula a day still - she's been big from birth with a huge milk appetite!)

Kat x

I wouldn't worry about the nutrients side of things. She's still very young and all her nutrients are provided in the formula so any solid food is in addition to that.
I don't see any harm in adding apple and gradually reducing it but at the same time don't feel like you *must* do this to get her to eat, she isn't going to starve if she refuses the apple-free meals you offer.  She might prefer some of those savoury flavours as finger foods rather than the mashed/lumpy foods, for example it looks like she's eating carrots now which she initially refused so there is already development of new tastes there.
Sweet potato tossed in a little oil and roasted in the oven makes nice 'chips' and kind of caramelizes on the outside which adds to it's sweetness, she might like those as a finger food for instance and although it's sweet it's a really nutritious vegetable.
If you find you are left with lots of purees you could perhaps use them as a spread on toast or mixed through pasta twirls as a kind of sauce.

So sorry for the late reply!

Thanks for all your tips :) I was just a bit concerned as i read everywhere that the iron reserves start going at 6 months so wasn't sure how to cover this!

Here's a list of iron rich foods which you might want to have a look at. Like I said before though her formula is fortified with all the vits and minerals she needs for now and she has a good intake of milk so no worries. As she approaches 1yo and the move towards cows milk you can ensure she gets enough iron in the variety of foods she eats but don't need to hurry just yet.
