in really hot weather?
« on: June 27, 2014, 19:01:18 pm »
I think i know the answer to tthis but my mum asked me to ask so i am. Its getting realy hot here so we are obviously drinking more water, im breast feeding and bottle feeding so the question is would  We make up the formula with more water than  Usual for them to get more water? Im fine with bfing more but feel that i cant really give more formula if they are Thirsty. Is there anything to do when its so hot?
Thanks!

I wouldn't dilute formula they are normally getting...not sure on offering water though that young. Oh here found this:

http://kellymom.com/nutrition/starting-solids/baby-water/

The article talks about not givint supplemental water under two months regardless if bf or ff and between 4-6 months no more than 2 oz for fun. If they are thirsty it says better to offer a feed.

I would just offer the breast more as you have that option. They do advise offering a couple of oz of cooled boiled water to babies who are only formula fed in the UK but not more than 2 or 3 oz spread over the day.

I would check with your own health professionals too as the recs may be different where you are.

Hmm that's interesting Laura, yes i could ask our dr if it came to that. I suppose another question would be how to know that they are just thirsty...

In the UK they give out a book called "Birth-5" which gives all the information you could possibly need (as if... ::) :P) and it does say in there to offer a little water if they are unsettled between feeds. I didn't find it helped but my two were refluxers and it doesn't get that hot here!

My DS was FF and we had a spell of really hot weather when he was born a couple of years ago and midwife told me to give an oz of cooled boiled water in between feeds but never before feed as fills up tummy too much.
