4 wo won't sleep anywhere but on me during the day
« on: July 07, 2014, 10:47:55 am »
Hi

I need some help with my 4 week old DS. I've been trying for two hours to get him to nap anywhere but on me. He settled on me after a feed then I put him in his Moses basket. He's asleep for about five minutes and then wakes up. He's yawning his head off now. Should I let him sleep on me? I have stuff to do though! And a DD to look after!

Please help! I was hoping for a nap today whilst DD was out but he just won't sleep! Or wakes very soon after being put down despite shh/pat and rocking the moses basket.

Swaddling?  A sling?

Hi

Swaddling helps a bit. I've just put him in the sling as he loves it. I was just hoping he'd sleep in his basket as it's so much easier when he's not attached to me. But I guess for now, he needs to nap so I'll stick with the sling.

Hi!  My DS2 is also 4 weeks.  He is my third child, so I totally relate to needing him to sleep in his bed!!  I just don't think it happens that easily.  I use the moby wrap or sling to ensure a good nap.  I feel like my other 2 learned around 8-10 weeks to put themselves to sleep, so I pick my battles.  That being said,  I always try for a nap in his bed.  I usually hold him for 10-15 min when eyes are closed before putting him down in his bed.  Mine wakes up at 45 minutes, so I've been putting him in the wrap to finish the nap.  I'm constantly reminding myself this is only for a short season they are like this, needing us so much, do am trying to enjoy it.  But it is a difficult stage.  Best of luck, you are not alone!!

I had this problem too! I started putting a hot water bottle in his bed so he wasn't going from my bodyheat to a cold bed, it seemed to help! Good luck it makes for very long days when LO only wants to sleep on you!

PPs are right that this is a newbie phase - it is totally normal and natural that he would want to be cuddled up, it's what he's used to.  He will learn gradually to sleep well in his cot.  I'm 100 per cent certain neither of mine would've settled for a moment without a swaddle!  Honestly, I found it easier at this tiny stage to use the sling and get on with things.  Try the basket as often as you like.  The idea of starting him in the crib and letting him continue in the sling is a good one, and worked well for us.  Do what works for you, perhaps use the sling more when DD is about and you can't spend time on DS' naps.

If you try the hot water bottle trick, make sure just to use it to warm the cot and remove it when putting DS in.  This might not really be an issue in summer time tho  :-\

I agree to just use sling/Ergo/Bjorn at this age.
My first always needed to be held for naps when he was little - but we got thru it, discovered baby whisperer and this forum and now he still naps at age 3 1/2.
When my dd came along she was a better napper but not perfect- needing my hands free and to get on with things I discovered the joy of her napping in the Bjorn and Ergo. We were often out or dropping her brother in car so I tried to just have one nap a day in bassinet - if possible!! But don't fight it at this stage just try what works - honestly, as I said my son was the same way as a baby - some are just real snugglers - but they learn and get through it and you will too.
