Wakes up screaming at every sleep & dropping a feed
« on: July 08, 2014, 04:45:33 am »
Hi mums,

My 9.5 mo has been waking up after his day naps screaming like he's being murdered and very hard to console. Often it's bfding that will stop him. He wasn't as bad before round 4months but now it's every single nap. I've tried being in there just before he wakes up so as soon as he wakes, I'm there. That way he won't cry but had the look of wanting to start. Are there any tips on how to encourage him to wake up not crying? I have a small toy in there that he likes to play with when he's putting himself to sleep, but he doesn't play with it when he wakes.
I was told that he can drop a feed down to 3 feeds at 9 months. I feed him when he wakes from his nap.
10am, 2-2:30, 6:30-7,10pm. I'm not sure whether he's ready to drop a feed when he's always wanting it straight after his nap. He is on the skinnier side too. 25th percentile.

Is he taking full feeds right when he wakes?  He may be waking hungry  :-\  My dd1 wasnt down to 3 milk feeds until 12mo, and dd2 was 15mo before I got her down to 3 milk feeds.  I wouldnt worry about trying to cut his milk feeds down to 3 until he starts refusing one, or starts taking less.

How long are his naps?  Could he be waking screaming because he was overtired?

Thanks mummies. He naps for 1.5hrs most time. Definitely do get 45min naps every now and then. But he screams for all of them.
I might hold off dropping his feed then.
But has anyone tried anything to encourage waking up not crying?

Are you seeing any signs of separation anxiety at other times?  Just wondering if that could be it?  Games like peekaboo can sometimes help with LO learning you will always come back.

Does he normally fall asleep without you being present?

Yes he always falls asleep without me. With enough wind down n a song then I put him down. He has been very clingy these 2 weeks after a trip overseas. So his screaming has escalated after that. But it has been happening before the trip too. We do play a lot of peekaboo and I have been sitting next to him. But he goes straight to big drops of tears instantly each time he cries now.

DD1 cried every time she woke.  Even if she was well rested and not hungry.  I dont remember when it stopped, maybe around 2/2.5yo...
