3-2 transition
« on: July 10, 2014, 14:01:38 pm »
Hi friends! J is currently in the midst of the 3-2 transition. Right now his a times are 2.5 hours and I wake him at 1.5 for his first two naps to preserve a 20-30 min cn. But he keeps waking earlier in the morning (after about 11 hours) acting happy.  I can get him to go back to sleep but it takes about half an hour. And he is starting to fight BT acting not tired enough. Switching yesterday from a 30 min cn to a 20 min cn didn't fix the problem. Plus he fought the cn so I felt bad pushing him to sleep and then waking him up after 20 min. I'd like to jump to 2 naps but I don't want to increase a times too fast. I'm pretty sure he could handle a push to 2 hours 45 min a time. Is it possible to do two naps off of this a time and do a little bit longer naps? I'm thinking of something like this (yes, he does late BT and WU which works well for our family):

WU 9:00
Nap 11:45-1:30
Nap 4:15-6:00
BT 8:45

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Is it asking for trouble to do longer naps and a shorter than 12 hour day? Oh, and how do you fit feeds around it? Right now he has 4 milk feeds and (just barely started) 3 small meals of solids (he's a huge kid!) Thank you so much!

Do you think he would tack on to his night sleep if he had a day shorter than 12hrs?  The other option would be to keep the cn and let his day get a bit longer.  I let dd2s days get to 13.5/14hrs before dropping naps because she didnt handle ot very well.  If he handles ot ok, then you could try dropping the cn, dd2 just couldnt handle it so I had to push bedtime back.

For Es when does he eat on his current schedule?

Thank you for your thoughts! We tried it for a day but he short-napped for the second nap so we had to throw in a short cn before bed after all!  ::) I don't think he was quite ready for the jump yet. This is what we are doing right now:

WU 9:00
Nap 11:30-1:00
Nap 3:30-5:00
Nap 7:30-7:50
BT 9:05 (although lately he's been fighting this for awhile)

Basically we do milk after sleep and solids an hour later. Plus milk before bed for the night. I just don't think he'll be ready to drop a bottle necessarily when we drop a nap, yk?

Sounds like you may have to increase one of his A times a bit more so he is tired enough for a good long nap, and so you can squeeze an extra milk feed in so he isnt waking up hungry  :-\  Since he isnt going to be able to drop a bottle at this point, you could add a top up feed into one of his A times, as long as it is 30min before nap and away from his room, then it shouldnt become a prop.  If he isnt eating a huge amount of solids yet you could always give a top up after one of his solid feeds to see if he can take a better nap.

Ok, thanks! At what point do babies typically go to 3 bottles?

Btw, he usually still does 1 night feed but last night he didn't so we may be dropping a bottle there and I don't know how that will affect his daytime feeds.

I think all babies are different!  My dd1 was down to three bottles around 12mo, dd2 wasn't down to three bottles until 15mo  :o

If he is trying to drop that nightfeed then obviously let that happen and just work day feeds around nap times :)
