Not sure if I'm milking a dry cow here or not... I'd like to have some clarification, I went looking in the Big Book for some help, and just got confused!

on page 284 of BWSAYP she talks about moving to one nap... ol' mate is sleeping til 7am I'm assuming, and usually had a nap at 9.30, Mum had to stretch him out to 10am etc - but Bub was 17mo with a 2h30 atime! The 2-1 box says that the child is at least a year old before the transition. Also on page 251 she says that babies 6-8mo nap around 9, and 9-12mo as late as 9.30am... page 39 says he can be on the go for 2.5-3hrs and around 18mo goes to one nap.....

Now I'm just throwing this out here... What is the first a time for a 9mo?? am I keeping him up for too long??? anyone got thoughts on this?

How long is a piece of string? Lol

I think from this age onwards it's very hard to say average a times because there's so much variation in what Los this age are doing . The best guide has to be whether things are working or not.

Lots of LOs have quite a short first A time before that first morning nap (I mean when on 2 naps) but can then do longer stretches afterwards.  Just cos it's a short A time before that first nap, doesn't mean all the A times will be that short.  When you start getting to the 2-1 I found it easier to stop thinking about A times so much.

Thanks ladies... I wouldn't mind if he slept better at night on his self-shortened first nap and long second, but he doesn't. And going longer a times just sends us into 1 nap territory which I'm not sure he's up to. Mind you on town days, he has lived on 2-3 30min naps for the day and then slept like a champ, but I'm not sure I want to risk it just yet.

Seeing as how he shortens his sleep himself to 30m, or less, I just thought that something mightn't be right (like for the last 9mo of his life- his mother is a screwball, but don't tell her that!)
THank you all none the less on the info regarding short a times first up. We got our second night with no wu's, from 7.05pm-4.34am. Don't get me wrong, it's an early start, but uninterrupted sleep is bliss. I put up with his grizzly noises until 5.45 when I pulled him into our bed and fed him, and he then slept til 6.45 (courtesy of a big brother alarm clock)... I'll take no WU's any day!

How long is his first nap?

With L we capped it at 15 mins at around 9.30am , just to get her through until after lunch, before we dropped it completely.  Maybe that could work for you?

regardless of a time or ew, his first nap is around 30m or less. I'm not sure if I should do w2s as it's a habit or genuine issue (hunger. pain etc).. would a different a time break a habit though?? like this morning he has just gone down after 4hr (his choice not mine - he was in for 10min before he nodded off) but he was up for ages during the night, around 12.20am and again at 4am and I think he woke for good at 5.30 if not before.

strange though, that the two nights before, he slept without wu's (wed)7pm-5.30, (thurs) 7pm -4.30am. on 2h30 or less nap sleep for the day. OT'd??
