LO feeding more at night than in the day
« on: August 11, 2014, 09:03:37 am »
DS is 9.5 wo and seems to feed more during the night than during the day. He feeds every 3 hours during the night and around 4 hourly during the day. Any ideas on how to extend the time between feeds at night? Should I try to feed more during the day? I have a strong let down which I try to catch in a muslin. He quite fussy during feeds though and often come on and off

Might be worth offering more in the day.  DS would also happily go 3.5-4h if left to his own devices, but I tend to offer roughly 3 hourly anyway so we get five feeds in between WU (6.30/7ish) and BT (7ish).

Yes I'd say your first step is to be waking and feeding more often in the day.  I'd try feeding 3 hourly and hopefully NFs will space out a bit once he's getting more milk in the day x

I have strong letdown and H was fussy during day feeds too, although would take lovely relaxed feeds at night.

As well as feeding more often (3 hrly), I'd also try feeding him when drowsy (e.g. immediately on WU from nap, still swaddled if you're swaddling and still in dark room if possible  - I know this is tricky with a toddler around though) and perhaps try feeding in a reclined position to help him deal with fast flow.

Maybe have a look at this too:
Oversupply and Overactive (Forceful) Let-Down

As H got older though she was/is better able to deal with the fast flow and so it's not such an issue any more.
