Mixed feeding
« on: August 11, 2014, 15:20:03 pm »
We are attempting mixed feeding here. Im going back to work and we are introducing formula for his lunch feed for now. I have tried a sippy cup but its a no go as he associates it with water and will literally have a tiny sip and then refuse, so we stuck to bottles. How much formula should he be having? At the moment day look like this

7 wu and breastfeed
8.30 solids
10snack
11nap-12.20 and formula feed ( today he had 3oz)
2 lunch
4.20-5nap and at the moment breastfeed but will be formula too
6.30dinner
7.30BF
8.00BT

I am also interested in answers. What is a full feed for a LO? Does it have to be 240ml/8oz?

A full feed really varies from baby to baby. For some 9oz is a full feed, for others 6oz is a full feed. The idea of a bottle feed is to offer more than you think they will take so that there is some left at the end of a feed. This is so that you know they have stopped because they are full not just because the bottle is empty. A feed should be done in 20 mins too.

Florena - how old is your LO now? From 6 months they need about 20oz of dairy to get their needs met, including dairy in food. Are you planning to wean completely or are you keeping some breastfeeds?

Hi Laura, thank you, Oskar is nearly 10 months. im hoping to keep the first feed and the last before BT as breastfeeds and the two during the day as formula.

I know i need to be consistent, but on weekends when Im at home I doibt he will take the bottle from me, could I just breastfeed for all feeds or is that confusing?

There are mums here who have mixed fed, I'll see f I can remember who they are! From what I remember though they fed from the breast when they could and gave formula if needed at other times and it worked fine. If he is getting two good feeds a day and more on weekends then giving a certain amount of formula isn't so critical. Most bottle fed babies are on 3 bottles by 10 months, so even if he has one feed during they day, with water he will be fine.

You could try a straw cup rather than a bottle too - breast fed babies do seem to prefer those to sippy cups.

Thank you Laura, just didnt want to confuse the poor child. So ill go with mix and match and see how he does. Its not like he will drink formula when im at home, he looks at me like I have lost the plot and goes for boobie!

You can't blame him really - formula is pretty nasty compared to breast milk!
