Allergy perhaps?
« on: August 13, 2014, 19:13:41 pm »
Just wondering if my 6mo LO may have a slight intolerance to dairy? I've been feeding him a baby porridge (made of spelt) that contains milk and have noticed his mouth and cheeks turning red after eating it. The redness goes away within 20min and there haven't been any other effects I've noticed. (ok. a little eczema too)
Anyway, I made him Oatmeal tonight and fortified it with formula. Same reaction! The only thing I can think of that both the wheat and the oat cereal have in common is the lactose.
He has had oatmeal before without the formula and nothing happened. Also, I've given him crackers with wheat and he does not react.
So, how can I be certain? I bought some yogurt and thought of testing him....
I have a doc's appointment next week, so I'll get some professional advice. But, until then, anyone?

PS I have only been using the formula for the DF.

He's had formula and cereal containing milk. Also, I gave him yogurt this morning. And his mouth turned a little red again!
Other than that, he doesnt seem to have any side effects from it.

Could it be gluten?

So he has had formula to drink from birth?i would have thought it unlikely to be an allergy to
Milk as you would have had vomiting, rashes etc

He's munched on Zwieback, a cracker containing wheat, and had no rash.
I introduced Formula at 6mo for the DF and haven't seen any reaction to it though either.
The only clue is the lactose in the baby porridge, the Oatmeal prepared with formula, and the yogurt I think.

I just bought some formula without any lactose. Will try mixing it in to his porridge to see if there is any reaction.
Should I give him any more yogurt or just leave it at the one try?

His Papa gets a bit gassy when he drinks regular milk, so I do buy him lactose free. But, cheese and yogurt don't seem to bother him.

There is lactose in formula though :-\ so it's unlikely.

Personally if your not sure and given his age I would avoid the food you think is causing the problem given the nature of the reaction (even if your not sure why) and then retry it in a month or two. :-\

But, I don't have kids with allergies, only intolerances so Clare pipe up if this is a terrible idea :P

The porridge mixed with the lactose free formula didn't have any reaction on his face. So, I conclude that for now I'll keep dairy off the menu. Will try again in a month or so, since the only sensitivity he shows is a little redness on his face directly after eating it.
Thanks Ladies!

Hi - maybe it is a direct reaction to the dairy? I agree to stay off it for a while and give it a go in a couple of months. x

Yeah. I'll stay off it. I REEEEEAAAALLY hope its just something he'll grow out of. His Mama is quite the dairy-fanatic so it would be hard to imagine doing lactose free or sneaking my servings of dairy....  ;D
