4.5mo awake time 3.5hrs but feeding 4 hrly, what to do
« on: August 30, 2014, 12:10:21 pm »
Hi, my 4.5 month old bottle feeds 4-hourly and this works well for him.  He naps for 1.5 hrs at most and then can tolerate being awake for about 2hrs.  As the day goes on, the routine seems to go off as his S/A time is shorter than his E time, so we end up with a EASAE routine.  E.g:

0700 Wake up
0700 E
0720 A
0900 S 1.5hrs
1030 A Wake up (30mins before next E)
1100 E
1120 A
1230 S 1.5hrs
1400 A Wake up (1 hour before next E)
1500 E
1520 A
1700 S 45 mins
1745 A
1830 E
1850 A Bath
1915 S
2230 Dreamfeed

Do I need to worry about this and either try to get him to sleep longer (although 1.5hrs seems to fit him well), or keep him awake longer (but I think then he'd be overtired), or should I stop worrying and accept he has an EASAE routine?  If so, what type of activity should I do between sleep and eat?

Thanks, Torf

Hi there, welcome to BW! :D

I would not worry at all about having an EASAE routine! It's perfectly normal to not have a strict EAS routine, and it won't be long before his A time increases and the nap gets pushed a little later and he'll be waking at 4hr, instead of 3.5. The main idea behind EAS is that baby isn't feeding to sleep and has some time to digest/burp/etc before being put down.  You are not dealing with either of those issues, so no need to worry.  It looks like you and he are doing great! :)

As for activity between sleep and eat, that's totally up to you and your baby.  If there's not much time, you may just want to do things on the floor/at home.  If there's more time in between, you can always go out for a walk, etc. Whatever works for you!
