BLW and food allergy
« on: September 12, 2014, 13:48:52 pm »
Hi Everyone !

My DS is 5,5 months, Nutramigen fed since 3 months due to serve stomach ans skin issues. Here in Poland doctors are forcing introducing solids when baby is 4 months already. I did not start in spite of this because I would like to follow BLW. We tried with BLW with my first DD, but it was not complete.
My concern is how to keep the BLW and let my DS eat what he wants, how to offer him a variety of foods and let him make a choice and at the same time try to find what he does not tolerate. How will I know what exactly caused the issue ? I will appreciate all the advices how to reconcile it. My DS seems to be very allergic, even on Nutramigen we still have issues with his skin and stomach....

I would focus more on the aspect of self feeding rather than a variety of foods so that you can introduce one food at a time and monitor reactions.  BLW isn't so much about offering a variety but more self feeding and joining family meals, it can be 1 food from the family meal and doesn't strictly need to be what you are eating that day but rather the type of food your family eats.
I actually found mine (with no allergies) didn't like to have more than 1 or 2 different foods on his tray at once, it was a bit overwhelming.
If you do food trials you will soon enough build a list of safe foods and be able to offer more variety at his solids meals. Don't forget these are just introductions to solids and there is no hurry to get onto full family meals immediately.

Moving your thread over to the food allergies board where you are more likely to get some experienced eyes on your question.

Hi Magdalena. My daughter is 6 months with milk and soy intolerance (breastfed) and we are also doing BLW. I agree with creations. Because your baby is sensitive I would introduce foods slowly and on their own to watch for reactions. I don't personally think 1 food every 3 days is necessary, but every 1-2 days wouldn't hurt. My daughter absolutely loved simple foods such as chicken, pork and sweet potato when she started out. After a couple of weeks we started moving onto foods prepared with multiple ingredients from the BLW cookbook. She has had a slight flare up of her tummy issue and eczema, possibly after introducing egg, but otherwise it's working out well. Good luck!
