Waking because of gas or habit?
« on: September 17, 2014, 06:50:20 am »
Hello everyone,
I'm not quite sure what to do for my lo. My son is 2 months old and I've weaned him off his night feedings, but he's still waking at 2 am and sometimes 4am because of gas. He pulls his legs up to his chest a lot and sucks his paci vigorously and won't go back to sleep until he at least passes gas. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I don't feed him or pick him up (except to change him) because I don't want him to associate that time with me but what do I do about gas? In case it's relevant, his last feeding is between 10:30 and 11:00 (df).
Thanks for the help!

Is he crying and wide awake or doing this kind of asleep? If he's 1/2 asleep and not crying then I'd leave him be. They do often do this when little. Some more than others but if you don't think it's hunger, and he isn't crying in discomfort or needing you I'd let him be. What do you think?

Hi Sara,
He's doing it in his sleep but if I don't do anything he really starts going with the kicking legs and moving his head back and forth until he wakes himself up completely. I'm not even sure if I settle him though because like clockwork around 40 minutes later, he goes back to sleep regardless of what I'm doing - as long as he hasn't gotten hysterical from me not doing anything.
He's also started losing interest in the 10pm dream feed (only eating 1-2 oz) which now means he's waking up at 1 instead of 2 looking for a bottle and then the 4 am waking with gas. Should I feed him earlier to give his system more time to process before he goes to sleep for the night? Like 6 & 9?
Thanks for the help!

I think the dream feed issue might be a separate issue from this 4 am thing (more along the lines of convincing my husband that it's better to slightly wake him up at 10 than have him up at 2). The 4 am thing I think is a habit because he just woke up at 3:40 this morning and I let him cry for a few minutes and he went back to sleep. Then just now at 4:20 he woke up again and I let him cry for 5 minutes (not cryin the whole time) before I went in and as soon as I gave him his paci and re swaddled him he went back to sleep. Does this sound like habit? Should I start extending the time I let him cry at 4 before I go in? How do I get him to go back to sleep on his own at 4 like he has shown he can do?
I really appreciate the advice!

Babies don't really wake for habit at such a young age IMO, after 4 months sure but before then they don't really have the brain development to do so. So your feeding at 10, then not at all till morning or again at 2? If your not feeding after the DF just feed at 3-4am. Lo is likely hungry particularly if your BF. ;)

Leaving babies to cry alone was very much against Tracy's philosophy as it breaks the bond of trust between parent and baby. Certainly if your lo is fussing on and off, which is called a mantra cry (trying to settle) hold back, but if your lo is crying for you - an I need you cry, then go in and resettle with shh/patting etc. sorry I'm not sure what you meant in leaving to cry ;)

Tonight he started wiggling at 2:30 and 4:00 both times he was completely asleep while doing it but still made a couple of "squawks" - not really crying but kind of a "wa" just one. I went in and put his pacifier back in and he thrashed around a bit (still completely asleep) for about 5-10 minutes - no crying, some grunting. The problem is, when he's making these noises and moving I don't know if he's asleep (and therefore I can go back to bed) or not and is going to need  me to give him his pacifier again after he spits it out. I'd love it if I could figure out how to stop him from waking especially since he doesn't want to eat and doesn't really wake up - just enough that if I don't give him his paci, he will really wake up.

It sounds like gas, or digestion. Its quite common at this age I think :-\  my second did this a lot.??but he has food intolerances etc so it got worse! not better with time.

I don't really think there is much you can do other than let him be, and intervene when/if necessary tbh...

Hello, just thought I'd add my experience which might not be at all applicable to your baby so apologies if that's the case. My dd has just turned 7 months and has always suffered from bottom end wind. Like your lo she would wriggle about at night and turn her head from side to side and then after farting she would immediately settle and go back to sleep. In the early days I would help her break wind by putting gentle pressure on her tummy or bit of massage whilst she was asleep or raising her legs in the air. I was worried that I was inadvertently causing it by not being able to get a burp up after her overnight feed, but then another mum told me that bottom end wind is often a sign of digestive problems rather than burping issues (I note that Zaczmumme said that her lo had allergies). My lo was breast fed at the start and we added in a bottle of formula when my nipples needed a break (!!). In the last few weeks after trawling the Internet for suggestions on how to help bottom end wind at night I have switched her formula to another one and almost immediately the over night wind has resolved. ;D
One other thing to mention, and again this is specific to my dd and I'm in no way saying that your lo has this but the wind got worse at 4months (I think there is a sleep regression here too) but I then realised that she had a mild case of silent reflux, which I'm happy to say has now resolved. My lo uses a paci and this helped her digestive issues too and helped her break wind.
Anyway, this is quite a lot of waffle, I guess the main point is to consider digestion as a cause and to reassure you that the bottom end wind Will got better  :) and I remember wondering if I ever thought it would. Hope things settle for you soon x
