Should I be moving to a 3.5 hour or 4 hour EASY
« on: October 11, 2014, 14:56:18 pm »
My LO is 14 weeks... and I think he can go 4 hours during the day without needing to feed (he has done on occasion).
My question is - do you push the awake time even if they look tired?  Or will this result in bad naps?
He was napping better - at least one nap over an hour a day.  Now (for the last 2 weeks) they are 30 mins without fail - but if he doesn't cry, I leave him in the crib and he resettles himself for up to 25 mins of broken sleep (keeps waking up now and then).

Even though I place him on his back to sleep - he rolls to his side every time now ... before he would stay on his back until the half an hour mark.  And we find it hard to resettle him when he is like this (with out hands on him), so have just been leaving him to see if he can settle himself.

Are the short naps a sign that he needs more awake time?  I tend to go by cues rather than awake time as his short naps mean his awake time should be shortened.

I have, however I am still not clear whether I should be following his sleepy cues or pushing him to stay awake longer.

Generally 30 minute naps suggest overtiredness, so in that case pushing him to stay awake longer could well backfire.  Do you want to post a typical/recent day in EAS format so I can see if there's anything that jumps out at me?

I will post an EASY...just need a moment!

But a follow up question in the meantime...how do you know if a 30 min nap is due to OT Vs UT
He tends to wake happy...if he doesn't, we try to get him down again straight away, usually on,y getting 15 mins or so.

I wanted to post a few resent days as I am really struggling with the NWs, and was wondering if it is because he isnt taking enough at each feed - i.e. is he snacking.   It is the wake ups so soon after bedtime that is worrying me.  Is he not taking enough calories before bed?  I feed in very dim light, maybe I should feed in the light?
Also he really doesnt settle without feeding...should I push PU/PD (which we do for naps, but havent needed to yet for night time)?  I am worried that it is the sleep regression kicking in and that I am creating a prop with these extra feeds.

I have in the last couple of days started to push the A time towards 2hours which has had some success with naps - as he was resisting them.  He doesnt fight naps as much - so I think he did need the push on A time

How old is he now?  It sounds like you've probably hit the four month sleep regression....plus some of his A times are quite long, especially after short naps.  The early evening wakeups are often due to overtiredness but during the sleep regression we seemed to get them regardless of how the day had gone.  Sorry that's not much help though :(. I did what you did, essentially feeding if it had been more than 3-4h and trying to resettle if not.  Does he go to sleep independently at bedtime?

He will be 16 weeks on Monday.  And yes I think we have hit the sleep regression.  He was up 4 times last night...I only fed twice tho.  He was hard to resettle the other times, I had to hold him for much longer than I probably should have.

He can go to bed independently... Sometimes he falls asleep nursing, and sometimes he doesn't.  He has been able to self sooth to sleep and back to sleep for a couple of months now...he sucks his thumb, but I guess that goes by the wayside during the regression?

The long awake times have helped reduce some of the nap fails...I do try to reduce A times after a short nap, but so times it just takes him a while to fall asleep.

I find judging the reduction in A times hard as he doesn't always show tired signs, or he shows then an hour before he is actually ready for a nap!

Are there any posts on this forum that can help me with the regression?

Should I force him to wake up when he falls asleep through nursing?  I do try, but I think I would be more successful if I fed in brighter light or left the room and came back?  Or is it OK that he can sometimes fall asleep by himself...will he "forget" this skill?

I've always figured that if my (normally) independent sleepers have fallen asleep nursing it's because they are shattered and therefore not much point in waking them.  If it happens occasionally I don't think it's a problem, just like the odd car nap doesn't ruin independent sleep x
