Routine lost....
« on: October 29, 2014, 19:28:40 pm »
So out little chap is 1 now, i cant believe it, but he is a proper little toddler now with his rather large character. And I love it, he is such a joy to have during the day, he is funny, inquisitive, clever and just pleasant to be around until it is time to go to bed!
We have had good times and bad times with sleep, but generally he isnt that great at it. He is an independent sleeper, and has been since about 4 months, but recently it has been pretty bad and it doesn't help that he is with the childminder 2 days per week and with mother in law for 1 day. And his days just vary so much. i would say he is LSN generally, but I have no idea which routine to stick to anymore
And our night have been pretty bad recently, but we are just so tired in the night to deal with all of it.

So what's a typical day look like?  Or if every one is different, what's happened the last 3-4 days?

This was today at the childminders

6.20
10.50-11.30
2.10-2.30
7.10

Not sure why she put him down to sleep so early for the second nap and im surprised he settled as he would have screamed the place down if i tried to put him for a nap thay early.

I dont remember A times yesterday, but he had a 20 min nap in the morning as he fell asleep in the car and then after 3.20A he had a1.20 nap and then had 5 hoursA until BT. The good thing was he didnt have the 40 min waking at BT he slept solidly for 3 hours which is rare.

Although tonight it was a battle to get him to sleep he is still asleep..which again is unusual.

We have had some one nap days, probldm is he never really sleeps for longer that 1.20mins and that theows the whole day. He would only sleep for longer if he slept with me on the bed but not in his cot.

Today has been like this so far:

6.10wu
11.10nap- woke crying after 30 mins, assume OT resettled still asleep now

So i guess 5A time is too much for him, the problem is that he just doesnt have any sleepy signs when he is with me, he can go on for 6 hours and just get hyper and OT so i need to establish sone sort of routine where i can put him to sleep without this screaming and he will sleep....

Honestly first nap has always been so easy no screaming etc, today has been nightmare he was tired after 4.30A we rolled on the bed for a bit an he was getting comfortable next to me. But ones he went into his cot the nonsense started.

So today has been
 7wu
12.08 nap-2.10- he woke after 49 minutes and i had to snuggle ob the bed with him to resettle him

So it will be a 1 nap day but frankly the sleep is worse now than what it was a couple of months ago.

At least as it is a Saturday I was allowe a lie in, I slept until 11am! This is unheard of really, all the sleeess nights are catching up with me I guess

Hi there Honey,

Dropping off some (HUGS) for you. I don't have any experience of disrupted routine due to childminders etc, so I will be back with some helps soon.

Hi there my DS went to nursery from 11 months old and naps I'll admit were awf but once he moved into a toddler room at 18 months sleep got better as they all have lunchtime naps.
Is there any reason why childminder does the 2 naps or are you just being led by LO?

Can you try a couple of days where you do an uncapped nap at 11.30 and if he sleeps 2 hours do a 13 hour day but if naps are shorter do a 12 hour day!? xx

Hi Zoe, she is very much led by him and of course he falls asleep in te car so easily. When he is with me we sometimes have 1 nap days, but he never sleeps for longer than 1.20 himself. And he cant do 5hours A time after 1.20 nap. Im stumped really because whatever we do the nights are terrible.
i would much rather him have two naps at the childminder else he will fall asleep at 5pm in the car on the way home and thats too late even for a 20 min nap.
I was debating doing a 20 min in the morn and then a lobg PM nap, but honeslty i have no idea if this will make any difference at all.

We had not great sleep at this age, combination of 2-1 and starting nursery where some days she managed one 15-30 minute nap all day ::). So from what we went through I would suggest something similar to Viktoria but with a shorter day to compensate for the potential loss of sleep at daycare and probably short naps to begin with.  Would your provider be prepared to stick to a set time if you asked?  We did a set nap and BT from about 11/12 months of 11.30/45 nap and 6pm BT.  Very very gradually moved BT out to 6.30pm over the next 3-4 months, before then needing to move the nap a touch later because she stopped settling well for it.

It wasn't pretty for about 4-6 weeks, I'll be honest.  Some days were only a 50 minute nap.  We never woke in the morning though and eventually she started making up for lost sleep a bit.  We also found she would make up for short naps at nursery with long ones at home - and all of a sudden we were having to wake her at 3 hours!  Unheard of.  Before then she only had a handful of 2h naps in her life.

If we had a horrendously EW, like pre-6am then we offered a short 20 min CN somewhere around 9/9.30am, PD for another nap around 12/12.30ish and limped through the day as best we could, then tried to go back to set times the following day.

She wouldnt have a problem at all stickong to set naps and he settles with her really well. Only problem would be is the falling asleep in the car when they go to any groups etc.
so.
So in terms of routine what would it look like,

He wakes around 7 generally.

Also he very rarely sleeps for 12 hours at night, so early BT usually is ok for a couple of days and then he is up early agter that. 10.5-11 hours is good for him. In fact if i cpuld get 11 hours less disturbed sleep would be much better than the waking up every 2 hours and screaming that we are experiencing at the moment.

Any teeth moving about?
Like Katherine said we had short naps and nursery then longer ones at home but it did take a while to get that huge nap...2-1 played havoc and made things very unpredictable but we did get the odd 13 hr night.

I'd try a couple of EBT just to see if you get a tack on x

He just had two top ones come through, nothing else going on. Im with him tomorrow at home, I will try to do set naps for him, it just seems that unless he has 2 hour nap we will always have two naps. If he wakes at 7 and only has tr usual 1.20 min nap, he will be wacked by 5.30 and he wont sleep for 13.5 hours :(.

I cant even think straight with these short naps.

I have looked at some routines for 13months plus and quiet a few do a short nap in the morning, has that worked for any of u?

My DS used to go long am nap and short CN about 3.30pm of 20 mins. Only reason I did it that way was because I could never get the A right after a morning CN.

It's worth a try adding CN in the am or pm just might combat some OT.

Thats what we sort of try and do, i struggle with getting the A time right before BT.... Eye rubbing here doesnt mean ready for bed. Generally 3.30A after 20 min nap. Ill try switching them around if he settles early for the nap and hope its not a total fiasco....:(
