19 month short naps
« on: November 10, 2014, 21:05:06 pm »
We made the switch to one nap about a month ago.  He has been having nap issues since right before the switch.  Our routine is

W 6:30ish (used to be 7 or after before the time change)
N 1230
BT 730

His nap lengths vary everyday.  Sometimes he'll only sleep 45 minute, sometimes 1 hour, sometimes 1:20.  He'll wake crying and stand up.  Every couple days he'll sleep for an 1 1/2 - 2 hours and wake up and be fine babbling for a while before crying out.  When he wakes crying I can go in and resettle him with pats and he will sleep anywhere from 1/2 hour to 1 1/2 hours longer.  He's never been a good napper, always 30 minutes when he was an infant. The last month has been all over the place.  His nights are good and he doesn't seem OT.  Any advice?  Is it a phase? He has been extremely clingy and somewhat grutchy the last couple weeks.

Hi Honey,

(HUGS) and a link for extra support. It does sound like it could be the 18 months sleep regression. Are there any developmental issues right now  ??? Talking leaps or teething for example.

It does seem development and probably the 18 SR.  He's really talking and becoming very independent. Maybe teething as well.  He always has his hand in his mouth.  He's eating a ton too.  He's waking earlier 6:30ish, but I think that's the time change.  He's just all over the place with naps and he had an 1+ NW last night.  Didn't seem uncomfortable just restless.  His behavior reminds of his 12 SR. and that lasted 6 weeks.  We went froma 5 A time to 6 in the last couple weeks, but I don't think that's the problem.

Good morning Hun,

I agree, and if you feel he was ready for 2/1 transition, then I don't think there a need for a permanent change his routine, as it looks good, and you may be fixing what isn't broken. All of the developmental issues are bang on time for the 18 month regression, it really is quite typical. Because of the NW last night, I wonder if OT is now setting in. You could consider bringing BT forward on short nap days, what do you think  ??? Is he likely to 'tack on' if you do this or EW from past experience  ??? As you say his A time has gone from 5 to 6 hours before nap, I wonder if an earlier nap would be achievable which would be the other option and may give you a longer one, especially if the NW set in.

As I'm sure you will remember from the 1 year SR, it really can be a matter of taking one day at a time, depending on night length, NW and using your 'Mother's Instinct' as to what is best from his mood and behaviour that particular day. WRT to teething, are you medicating before his nap  ??? You could also try elevating his head with a pillow underneath his mattress, which can aid rest, due to preventing the blood 'pooling' around his teeth and causing pressure, this helped our DS quite a lot during teething and also 'ear infections'.

One more thing I did with DS was car naps and pushchair naps when possible as he would often sleep longer. Sometimes it was just a matter of a 10 minute walk until he dropped off then bringing him home and inside the house to finish his nap. I would add, try not to worry about  APOP (if necessary) during these regressions when your LO is already an IS, as they can always go back to how things were once through the regression. Just do what you can to achieve the maximum amount of sleep day to day.

Let me know your further thoughts Hun  :)

x.

We had a short NW last night at 12 and he woke around 615 crying.  I cuddled with him this morning to get some extra sleep.  His cheeks were really flushed this morning, so maybe teething discomfort.

I'm still not sure about morning A time.  I feel like when he was sleeping until 7-730 I would nap him at 1230, so a shorter A time and his naps were still all over the place.  I just don't want to start his nap to early and have a really long A time before BT.

So today he slept until 7:30.  I put him down a little before 1, so less than 5 1/2 A time and he woke 30 minutes later sitting fussing.  I laid him down, gave him a few pats and he was asleep in less than a minute.  He slept another hour and woke happy babbling.  Even with a shorter A time he had a hard time and even woke sooner 1/2 hour rather than an hour or more like he's been doing.  At least for the most part I can get him to go back to sleep with some pats, so he's still getting a good nap everyday, he just has needed help doing so.

I certainly would stick with his usual A time if he had a 12 hour night straight through, that is super :) If he is happy in himself, then I would try not to worry. Go with 6 hours A time after a good night, and if he clocks up an 1.5 hour nap or so, even with your intervention (well done! you) that's pretty good  :)

Finger's crossed for a good day Hun  :-*

He's been STTN the last couple, but today he woke after only a 50-55 minute nap.  He wasn't crying or fussing, just babbling and yelling.  He woke happy, so wouldn't resettle.  He's just all over the place.  ??? How long does the 18 SR usually last?  He's finally doing independent play again and not as clingy.

We're at about 4 weeks here, so just going to wait it out. I heard it could last awhile.
