how do I transition hsc dd to a bgb?
« on: November 12, 2014, 05:02:14 am »
Any tips or success stories?
Dd is happy in her cot. In a grobag. Doesn't attempt to climb out. However she is tall and really there is maybe 30cm left of length left before she is too big. Also, she will need to be out i guess when we try to pt soon. Plus, I'd like to swap her cot and give it to ds as I think his is not as sturdy.
So. considering she isn't generally the most flexible child on earth... do I
A. Take off the cot side for a bit (she might get upset as she will consider the cot 'broken' without the side)
B. Get a new toddler bed with sides, like a car or something - she likes cars and we could reuse for ds anyway and then transition her to a new single bed down the track
C. Move to a new single bed ct. It will have to go in a different spot in her room than her current cot.

How do I do this? She has never slept in a bgb. Only spent one night on vacation in 3 yrs when she was 17mths or so. She also doesn't seem to care about being a big girl, so that is no incentive... I think she'd never ask for a bgb herself. Am I rushing things with her?

my dd is 2.5 and still in a crib  - with a crib tent! she cried out the other night when i forgot to zip up the tent (she started climbing out around 17 months?).

the one time my DD slept in a regular bed (with my DS & DH in hotel bed) - she fell off the bed!!!

anyway, i'm in no rush. I wouldn't worry about it for a while. when is her bday?

we are in the beginning stages of PT too but i'm just going to have her pee before bed and then use pull up at night not sure she would wake up to pee anything.

however, i have a dangerous 2.5 yo DD! She would prob walk out the door in the middle of the night so i'm leaving her in the crib as long as possible.

My ds was 3.5 when he dis the transition to bbb. And he is very tall too! In my opinion, if it is not broken I would not fix it... Ime a later transition meant a smoother one, as ds was older and understood better the process.
Pt is not linked to cot transition for us, as nighttime dryiness usually comes later. And you can just implement the rule that if she needs to pee she can call you, but then she has to go back in bed.

I think leave her be too.....but when you do get a BGB you could consider the Gro bedding - it (I think) is joined up along the side like a big sleeping bag so less chance of losing covers and more like a sleeping bag in terms of security.  Is there room to put a BGB in her room at the same time as the crib so that she could get used to it being there and have the option to try it if she wants to?

There is room to put in the bgb and leave the cot.... if we remove her story chair (our old nursing rocking chair). I suppose the bedtime story can happen on the bgb. Just dd does not like change. I guess if it was a bouncy bed and I let her jump on it she may warm to it faster.
I will look for the gro bedding Katherine. When it is hot she has slept without the grobag but generally she has one. I could always add snaps to her bedding to secure it if I had to!

Could you get a bed and let HER decide when she wants to sleep in it, if there is room for both? We transitioned DS to a toddler bed (his cot, with the sides off and a different bit for the bottom) around 2.5 and he got involved in the whole construction of it all and was super excited.

If you want to involve her, you can:
Let her pick out new bedding
Let her help to put up whatever you buy/need to build
Snuggle up in the new bed with her for stories

Then you could just leave it in her room, let her play on it and have it ready there for when she wants to sleep in it. Giving her control might be all she needs, and then she has the choice between being squeezed up in the cot or having all her teddies etc in with her in her bed.

Besides maybe getting a bgb in the room, I personally would not bother yet. 12" is a lot of room and kids don't grow as rapidly as they get older. With pt, night time dryness has nothing to do with day training so that would not be a factor for me., many kids still need diapers at night long after they are days trained.

Thanks everyone! I haven't been in a rush until now,  I think I really just don't like the cot ds has and want dd's for him. Selfish mummy! Hmmm I just laid out her grobag, there may only be 20cm spare... but she curls up, I think she will be ok in that size bed for a bit. I agree, once she chooses to move to the bgb the transition will be easier.

Someone in my neighbourhood is selling a toddler bed cheap I saw today on gumtree. I thinkIing of getting it. That way she can keep her same linen on it and maybe it won't be so scary. Should I put that where the bgb will go, ditch the story chair and keep the cot for a bit, or make a leap to toddler bed putting it where the cot is, but, keeping the story chair?

Ok so I got the toddler bed for dd. Set it up for her today while she was at the beach, strung up multi coloured butterfly fairy lights (battery operated) on the bedhead and when she got home made a big deal about it (she loooves lights).

So far so good - bt as normal, she went straight to sleep! Fx for a smooth transition!!

It went great! No getting out of bed mischief. In fact she woke at 5.30am and I saw her on the video monitor just in bed chatting and playing with her zebra toy (who I saw on the floor so during the night he fell out of bed and she must have found him later sometime). She didn't get out until I came in to her room at 6am!
I think she is so used to getting out of bed when I come get her that it might not have occurred to her to just do it herself whenever!
So for a first night it was excellent.
