Need a Game Plan – 12 month old won’t sleep
« on: November 19, 2014, 03:15:15 am »
E is just a week over 12 months old.  His sleep has progressively gotten worse in the last few weeks.  He was never a great sleeper but would easily go 4-6 hours between awakenings.  He is now waking every 1-2 hours and is not very easy to get back to sleep.  And he has been waking by 5:15, 5:30 and is almost impossible to get back to sleep.  I noticed he was having early wakings, so we cut out the morning nap.  I will post our old EASY schedule and NEW EASY schedule.  I feed him once somewhere between midnight and 4 (depending on the night). He seems hungry and has that “cough” in his cry.
I am an accountant and my busy season starts mid – January.  I need a game plan to get my guy sleeping through the night or only waking once a night to eat before January.  I have 6 weeks. I work 60 hours a week, so I really need him to sleep.
OLD
A – 6:30-7
E – 7:00 breastfeed, then gets tablefood
7:45-8 drop off at daycare
S – 9:45-10:30
E – 11:00, 4.5 oz bottle of BM
E – 11:30/noon – lunch
S – 1:30-3:30, nap anywhere between 1h20m to 2h
E – 3:30 4.5 oz bottle
PU from daycare 5:30
E – 6:00 – breastfeed, 6:30 – tablefood
6:45-7 – start bedtime routine, bath, lotion, play in room, read a book, turn on sound machine, turn off lights, hold him, lay him down in bed slightly awake, sit by crib until asleep

NEW
A – 6-6:30
E – 7:00 breastfeed, then gets tablefood
7:45 – 8 Drop off at daycare
E – 10:00 4.5 oz bottle of BM
E – 11:30 – tablefood
S – 1:00-3:00
E – Snack
5:15-5:30 – pick up from daycare, immediately breastfeed
6:30 – Tablefood
6:45 – 7 – start bedtime routine, (same as above), asleep by 7:30

We practice PU/PD, but more just PD now. I lay him down when he stands up or gets on his knees.  I tell him to laydown, it’s time for sleep, I’ll be here when you wake.

I am trying to gradually move further away. For about 3 weeks we stayed (sometimes) slept right by his crib.  Now, I sit about 5 feet away and try to comfort with words first. I’ll place my hand on his back or hug him while he stands in his crib if he is crying.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Please let me know what your gameplan would be for getting my guy to sleep better within 6 weeks. I’m willing to put in the work. (I have for 12 months already).

*No health issues.

*He was asleep by 7:30 tonight. Woke at 8:45 and my husband has been up there for 30 minutes and E is really crying.  He does it for me too. Last night I sat up with him for 1.5 hours before he fell back to sleep. I really need a detailed game plan for 6 weeks.

I forgot to mention. Before his sleep started to go downhill he was a thumb sucker. Had a horrible teething experience and was a bit sick and he hasn't sucked his thumb since then. We did have a week or so of good sleep after that, so I don't think it's that.  Also, just last week he just happened to sleep 7:30pm - 6am. I did nothing different. My husband was out of town that night so was not involved in the bedtime routine.  But the next night was back to his usual 4-6 night wakenings and husband was still gone.

Is there any way to bring his nap earlier? That is one super long morning A time! Also do you think because he does still get fed at night it might be a prop of sorts? How easily does he settle back without a feed? He could be at a loss of what to do to self soothe if he has given up on his thumb, does he have a lovey?

It depends if he settles well after a feeding at night. It used to be consistent and I could lay him in his crib and walk out. But now he doesnt fall to sleep easily after. He does not have a lovey. I agree, the wake time seems too long. Should I put him back on 2 naps a day?

He is definitely overtired. How do we get back on track? And how do I help him learn to sleep better?

Personally I would want to wean any nf's as it looks like he is taking in lots in the day and after one year solids are more the mainstay than milk, and also that would help for you to be consistent when he has nw's. Has he ever been an independent sleeper? If not then gradual withdrawal is probably the way to go. How long has he been on one nap?  Do you think if the nap was earlier he might nap longer? Or do a short am catnap and keep the current nap where it is (my kids all were on one nap by 11 months but certainly lots can still do two naps for longer!).
