Quick 2:1 question

Do you still do full first A even after a bad night? My lo seems tired at around the 3hr mark after a bad night, if I put him do

If I put him down at that point he will sometimes sleep for an hour (catch up I guess) but then he refuses his pm nap and goes into meltdown! If I apop it doesn't always work, if it does then nap is too close to bt. So should I keep to long first A even after a bad night?

I think my lo is moving to 2-1  but she is teething now so bad that she has bad nights and sleeps whenever to catch up.
If she has a bad night (like she has for the past 4 nights) I put her down 2-3h after wu so that there is enough A time so that she can have a second nap, usually around 2-3,usually it 1h.
Today I got her out of the crib at 8 but dh said she was awake at least half an hour before that. I put her down just before 10.
Yesterday she got up at 7 and first nap was 9:30. Then another one at 2:30.
The day before wu at 7:30, napped at 10:15 and the day before at 10:30

If she does not have a good rest she will have meltdowns all day long, so Im just doing what I can to prevent that.

I think my lo has just started teething again too. I have just put him down after 3hrs A and he really fought it, but I could tell he was tired. I don't think he'll do more than 30 mins though, just got a feeling. He was up for 1.5 hrs in the night upset. Think it was a combination of OT and teething. Yesterday I put him down after 3hrs 10 mins ( which is a really short A for us) but he was literally falling asleep. He did an hour but then come the afternoon I couldn't get him to nap at all. I had to take him out in the car ( which he resisted) but then soon fell asleep for 30 mins at 4.45 which is just a little too close to BT.  Then he fought BT which I'm not sure if he was OT/UT or just upset through teething.

Have you ever tried to go the short morning nap, long afternoon nap route? I don't know exactly where you are in the 2-1, but if you can get the short am/long pm nap to work, it can really help for catching up from nights like you describe and prevents the pm nap refusal. My DD teethed pretty much continuously from 15mo to 2.5yrs. She went to one nap at 17mo, but would still do the short am/long pm nap after a rough night from teething up until she was 2yr old!

Hi, I've just seen your post Katie. I could try a short am nap and a longer pm, but not sure lo will go for it. I find it easier pushing the first A put than the second A. I can never seem to find the right A for the second nap and often he fights it. Something to consider and think about though for sure. Thank you for the suggestion. My lo is nearly 10 months, were right at the start of this 2:1 transition and he's not ready for one nap just yet, but was doing okay with a long first A, good 1.5-2 hr nap at lunchtime, then an apop nap at tea or early bt. Now it appears he's teething again and it's all gone to pot! He's waking at night most nights and appears to have lost the ability to self settle too I think there's abit if seperation anxiety going on too. Im trying to roll with it and just make adjustments in the A time to allow for catch up. Not easy...

Ahh, (((hugs))), it's tough when there's so much at play. If it's hard to figure out the second A and you had a routine that worked well, then I'm sure you'll get back there. Teething is the pits and SA often goes along with it.

Thanks Katie. A times are all over the place with the interupted night sleep and self settling has gone out the window here. Fingers crossed we can get back on track. Thinking I'm going to have to try some PD, just posted over on that board. Thanks

How do you help him settle? do you give him medication for the teething?

DD is teething big time. Waking a lot a night. SA is ughhh So I fallow her cues. She had one long nap yesterday and today she had 3 naps. She hasnt done that in months. She is like stuck to me.
Imo if he is teething Id just let things be as they are,ts just to follow him but gently guide him trough the day. You can continue with the transition when the teeth is out. And it will take a while for him to get to 1 nap anyway.

I give him teething powders and gel. And he has paracetamol if needed too. The thing is, I can't see any evidence of teeth emerging, just dribble and like you say abit clingy with disrupted nights. I too in my heart feel its best to just roll with it. I'm not worried about naps too much as long as he's getting some day sleep. Today he's had one nap and yesterday he had one short am, one long pm. Day before that was one long am and one short pm so we are abit all over the place. But as long as he's sleeping I'm happy. It's just he now requires holding to sleep and when he wakes at night it's the same. I suppose I just don't want it to become a habit and worry he'll never go to sleep on his own again if I keep holding him. I dread any kind of st, can't bare to hear him cry. Maybe ill just carry on as we are for now then. What do you think?

I do not want to ST at all. I dont think Ill never will, I dont have the guts. That`s why Im not doing paci weaning
The only difference I can see is that my lo hates being in rocked to sleep. What I do is lay next to her (her crib is our bedroom so I lay on the bed) and put my arm on her  hold it there until she calms down, fall a sleep. You think that will work for you and your lo?
Or maybe you can try baby wearing and see how that goes?

This is what I do during rough patches of sleep too... trying not to use a prop of holding/rocking, but being more of a presence so that I can just gradually remove myself when needed. If it is teething that's bothering him, I've found it's difficult to get rid of the prop until they're through the worst of it and then it's really not so bad if they were an IS before. (((Hugs)))

Thanks dache and Katie. I think he would fall asleep wuth what you suggest, but logistically it's wouldn't work. He is in his own room and his cot doesn't have a drop side. It's really hard to know what to do because, like you dache I can't bare the thought of st and like you say Katie its not ideal or fair to do it anyway if we suspect teething. But the options are leave him in the crib but reassure verbally which sends him into meltdown at the minute or pick him up and hold him feel like I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't think ill just have to carry on as we are for now and hope like you say he'll go back to IS when he feels comfortable to.

Ps. I have a carrier and love it, he used to nap in his sling when very little for hours, but not the case these days

Does his crib has bars? I squeeze my hand between the bars in and out trying not to wake her.
If you think that you need to apop that`s fine. Do what ever works for you and your lo. You will have time to fix things after his teeth are out.

Yep, that's what I do too. I don't lower the crib side (we have one of the last models you can actually do that!), but just stick my arm through the bars and either rub the back, hip, thigh or just rest my hand on him somewhere.
