Very short and very long naps : need to fix ?
« on: December 11, 2014, 14:44:18 pm »
Hi !
My DS seems to have settled in a typical pattern lately with short morning naps and really long afternoon ones.  I have tried everything i can think of to extend the morning nap without success... Here's his EASY:

E 7h30
A
S 9h00 : always short 45 min nap

E 9h45
A
S 11h30 : long 3+ hrs nap

E 14h30
A
S 16h15 : short 45 min

E 17h00
A
S 19h30

Nights are ok with 1 NW/ NF around 3AM.

He seems quite happy with this schedule, but i am suspecting he is getting OT in the morning and i know he is "supposed" to have more balanced naps... Would you try to fix it ? and if so how ?  Should i wake him up after 2hr in the afternoon ?
Thanks !

You know what hun, if you're happy with this routine and it fits in with your family life, I would just go with it for now. As long as the nights are ok and you feel he's well rested?

I personally would wake on the 3hr mark to ensure he got all his feeds in during the day, but with only one nf atm that doesn't seem to be a problem either. Are you bf? Might be worth an extra top up feed 10mims or so before that nap (obviously not feed to sleep), but might be difficult if he's so tired then anyway  :-\

All in all, I'd say if it's not broke... But would be interested to hear what others think too. I never got longer than 45mins ever with my DD until she was nearing the 2-1! X

Hi Niki ..just wanted to know how things are? My DS is 8 weeks n he also follows a similar pattern..short naps in morning n evening and a very long one in afternoon (sometimes 4 hours with a feed in between)...but since 2-3 days this has started affecting his night time sleep..was just wondering how its going for U..

I would continue with that routine especially that it's a great background for nap dropping in future. Just take care of total sleep during day and look out for nights. If he will start to wake at night and will be ready to play, try maybe than to change the routine.
However even then maybe he will be more eager to cut out one nap than to shorten the one you have at midday.

If you will consider cutting I would cut at 2h and be happy with two 45min naps before and after!

Hth!

Ps I would also offer top up before nap let's say at 11!
