11mo old naps
« on: January 04, 2015, 00:41:56 am »
We are in a lot of transition right now, so naps have been all over the place, unfortunately. Generally, however, my 11month old has been doing a 1h nap in the am and then will conk out for a looong afternoon nap in the afternoon. My problem is that he won't go down  for his afternoon nap until 5pm-ish at the earliest which then means I wake him up by 6pm and he's cranky. Bedtime gets bumped later and later because he sleeps so late too.
Usually he wakes up around 7am and will go down for his first nap around 11 or so (sometimes he does sleep longer in the am). He can easily go for longer periods of awake time and has done one nap days here and there too. (he's not the kind to have melt-downs, so making him stay up late is too easy to do).

Its been a little crazy because of our moving (we've been with the in-laws for the past month) but I still want to have some sort of rhythm to his day. Should I transition him to a one nap schedule? He sleeps 11hrs at night, so how much day-time sleep should he be getting?

You could look at capping that morning nap to around 30 mins and see if he'll take the afternoon nap sooner?

Alternatively if you feel he can cope with a bit of OT for a while you could jump CT to one nap. So you set nap and BT, hold for a week and see how he does. The idea with set nap and BT is that you try and regulate their day and timings. BT could be up to 30 mins earlier in a case of a short nap, but otherwise you try and stick to the times. More often than not after a couple of week the timings need to be shifted a bit. For example for mine, I needed to move the nap out a little and once she was napping well she reverted back to her 11hrs ONS after a month or so.

If you were to go this route, I would attempt the nap to be at 12pm with your 7pm wu considering he's doing an hour UT nap at 11am anyway, then set BT at 7 or 7.30pm for a while (again, this may need to be shifted later on, but gives them chance for extra sleep if needs be). Currently he's getting 2hrs sleep a day and 11hrs ONS so I would expect once he settles into the new routine, he'll revert back to that. Does that make sense? Wdyt?

Oh interesting. I hadn't thought to change the bedtime.
So if I set the nap time to noon and bedtime to 7pm, he should be able to get used to that routine, right?

We are moving in a week, so I won't try any new routines just yet (as jet lag is coming our way). But, you do think a one nap schedule is ok for 11 month olds? I'm not dying to loose the second one, but everything seems to get messed up with bedtime.

And here's a new twist. Today he wu at 7am, took a 2hr nap at 11 and then a 45min nap at 4pm. The two hour nap was thanks to Dad taking him for a loooong run. Anyway, I keep wondering if he still needs two after all. Its just complicated with Bedtime

Is he getting close to his birthday hun? We had a good 2 weeks of 2.5hr naps AND a 12hr night. It was really strange. I've helped another couple of people on here too that experienced the same thing. Think it may be a nice ww if they exist?  ;)

Yes the plan with set nap and BT is that they can regulate their day. You may need to tweak things slightly later on once they get used to it. I think the whole process for us took less than a month, but I realised DD needed a much longer A first thing than last thing.

I would wait until after you move hun, then come back and we'll start a plan wdyt? Oh and that's a very long run, omg! Don't think I'd last 10mins!
