Sore breast
« on: January 08, 2015, 01:48:10 am »
My right breast has had some shooting pains for the last few days but nothing too bad. Today it's incredibly sore. I was out this morning so DS got a bottle of expressed milk and I pumped my right breast when I got home. It filled quite quickly again and I thought it was sore from being so full but DS just had a good feed and it still hurts. It's particularly sore to the touch on the right side but I can't feel any lumps. What could be causing this? Is there anything I can/should do?

Hmm I know I had shooting pains from thrush with DD1 but nothing else like you describe. Mastitis maybe?

I had residual shooting pains after mastitis but not during for some reason. Be sure to have a look at the link Ali posted.

I just read it. I have no redness but i have been aching and feeling flu-like so maybe it is mastitis. I have a well baby appt tomorrow so i will ask the midwife.

Have you tried taking a hot shower or putting a warm compress on it? Sometimes the pain and soreness can continue for a while even after the duct gets unplugged. I find that sometimes the soreness is caused if my bra has a bad fit. Hope you are feeling better

Is it painful to feed? You do need to keep feeding through mastitis (if it is mastitis) but you can take painkillers to manage the discomfort.  Ibuprofen will help reduce swelling as well as dealing with your aches and pains, so take that in preference to anything else.

Rest if you can and make sure you drink enough!

It's better today but it's hurting when my breasts fill with milk. The midwife thought it could be thrush so I'm making sure to keep them clean and dry and I have a script for the anti-fungal cream if it gets worse. I am making sure to wear a loose-fitting bra and I think that's helping.
