Q on short naps & subsequent A times
« on: January 08, 2015, 07:39:08 am »
My DS is 7.5 weeks old...from very broken naps n jolting every 10 mins we have graduated to 45 mins naps..

We donot have a schedule as of now as he still feeds erratically at 2 to 2.5 hours and due to short naps his A time also get affected but I am trying not to let him nurse to sleep (sometimes have to)..

I have had some luck extending his naps..at the 30-35 min mark I pick him up n start to shh pat him on my shoulder...

My Q is that if he opens his eyes at 35-45 min mark n resettles quickly into another 45 min nap then should I treat this nap as a 1.5 hour nap (though I have seen that often DS wakes up crying by the end if the second 45 min nap n wants to sleep more) and after this nap what A time should I keep?

Also sometimes I am not able to resettle quickly n he cries fir 10-15 mins before dozing off again..what should be A time when he gets up in this case...

Just to add...We swaddle and I shsh pat him while carrying him...but I lay him in crib only when he is asleep (have tried putting him drowsy but awake but he always wakes up at 10 mins mark crying)

thanks for you replies in advance...

Sounds like one of my kids!  If he quickly resettles I have counted it as a full nap. If he stays awake for a bit then takes another nap I count it as a 3/4 a nap :). This is when you have to try to pay good attention to his cues to help you figure out how long he can stay up for the next round.

I would count both as a full nap. At that age, A time isn't that all that long anyway, so if he sleeps at least an hr, even if broken, I'd think he'd be able to make a full A time or at least close to it.

Thanks for your replies...i think I'll try both ways n see how it goes...my LO always seems to give sleepy cues very early on during A time even after a full good nap...so I always try to keep A time on the lower side...may b I'll try little linger A time n see how it goes..
