12 mth old 45 min naps
« on: January 18, 2015, 01:58:00 am »
Hello

Dd2 is 12.5 mths and we are finally not sick, not teething, and not travelling! So I have been working on her sleep.  today is day 6 of falling asleep in the crib for nap and bedtime.  And it is going so much better than I thought!  I switched to one nap as two was causing numerous problems prior to this week- nap refusal, 30 min naps, too long days, too short nights.  And she has been pretty happy.

This is what I aim for/what has been happening:

Awake between 7-8

A 5 hrs till in crib.

S takes awhile to fall asleep. 45 min nap

A

S in crib 11/11.5 hrs from waking bc her naps are too short

Here's today:
Jan 17
Awake 7:35

R@10:25

In crib 12:17. Not happy. Too tired.  Collapsed 12:28-1:15

L@3:03

R@6:43

In crib 7:00. Too late.  Not happy.  Calmed, laid down holding hand, hand on chest.  Calm 7:10/7:15?  Eyes closed 7:28

The OT is starting to build.  Hasn't been so happy going into the crib the last couple days.  No more playing, just miserable.  Stretches at night are not as long as the beginning of the week.

Day 1 I extended nap by nursing to 1.5 hrs bc we had to go out that night
Day 2 she did 1.5 nap
Then it's been 45 min naps

I haven't tackled night wakings yet.  Need to make her settle in the crib at night still.
What else can I do?  I feel like she might go to sleep earlier, would if we were driving, but isn't 45 min under tired?

Have you tried resettling without nursing? Yes, 45 minute naps are typically UT, but I have found with enough OT in the LO's system that things can present in a different way! 12.5 months is pretty young for one short nap throughout the whole day. Have you tried going in about the 38 minute mark and see if you extend the sleep? If you can't get a decent nap then I would surely add in a CN or do a shorter day, maybe as early as 6. Where are you with teeth?

So I've kept at it.  I've moved her nap up just a smidge. Her naps this week have been 1hr -1:30.  And I try for a decent/early bedtime. But I often feel she's in bed too late at bedtime still as her nap isn't quite long enough.  She has been settling beautifully for naps and bedtime is often a little hairy. Today was a bit different, but still confirmed what I think.  Her first short nap in quite awhile.

Jan 25
Awake 7:15? Not too happy.  Still tired.

In crib 11:50, I was singing, holding her hand, her eyes closed 11:52?-12:33 (short bc OT?)
L@12:35 to resettle, c12:59-1:50?

C7:09, sshing, holding hand. She didn't stand up! 7:21 Rolled over and settled

So maybe those 45 min naps were OT? And maybe we're easing out of it and she's learning to extend her nap?
Haven't tried going in earlier to extend naps.  Can't resettle a nap without nursing.  Just trying to do some resettling without nursing at night.

She has her front 4 teeth. Still don't see signs of more.

Nights are a mess.  OT?  She was doing some 4,5 hr stretches sometimes when I started this at the beginning of the month.  No more.

So if I can get her to do 1.5-2 hr nap and a 12 hr night is that good for her age?  She'll be 13 mths in a few days.

That is absolutely typical and acceptable amount of sleep. Given how broken up I would say that the BF to sleep is becoming a pretty good Prop and that can really be troublesome at nighttime as LO simply doesn't have the skills to go back to sleep without it. Can you describe what you are doing at night to resettle without BF? How often are you feeding then. I would consider some sort of "camping out" in her room and some PD to sort that out if you want to tackle it. Hugs!

The last few nights I have been doing some resettling without feeds.  Laying her back down and telling her to close her eyes.  Sssh, pat, or holding hand as needed.  I actually did start camping out in her room!  Makes those re settlings easier as I can respond right away.  And sometimes patting if she's looking like she's going to get up.

As for feelings.  Because she has still been ending the night with me (except last night!)I don't nurse her till about 10, then about 2:00, then before bed.  That's a good day. And so I've been asking for at least 4 hrs between feeds at night.

Here's the last few days:

Jan 29

Car seat 10:10-10:20?

C12:56, sleeping 12:57-1:23, sat up, laid down with patting!  Amazing! Till 1:57
Had Fever when woke up.  Not happy.
L@2:15 to sleep-2:35

4:30 not happy. nursing, wanting to sleep

Held to sleep, 6:19, c6:26

So excited about last night.  She needs to do it by herself, but at least she was in there all night.  And now she's sick.  Ugh.  So hopefully we can get through the night without excessive nursing.  I'm still nursing a sprained foot so I can't stand and hold her.

I'm hoping that as she gets better at self settling her nap will lengthen a bit.
