Is it possible to get a toddler to sleep 6:00
« on: January 22, 2015, 07:55:21 am »
DD1 has pretty much always been an early bird. But settled into a WU of 6:45/7:15 this has changed to 6ish (we are going through 1-0). So really just wondering if there is any way of getting her to sleep later or even get her to stay in her room quietly. When she wakes in the morning she instantly starts moaning (like a fake cry) which progressively gets louder and more crying of I don't get her straight away. She also wont let anyone else other then me get her out of her cot or she has a total meltdown.

Any suggestions please. 6am every morning is getting tiresome with a baby who still wakes during the night.

Gro clock or lights on a timer are helpful.

First I would set the clock only 10 mins later than her usual wake up, and though some people don't, we rewarded and praised Z for staying in his room and waiting for the sun. We did a lot of talking about why resting in bed is good for your body etc. (though he has always been s pretty good sleeper)
Once she is waiting the 10 mins then extend another 10 (maybe after a week or so) and gradually move it towards 7.

I would just treat it like a NW and tell her "oh look, it's still night time, mr sun isn't up yet so you need to stay in bed and go back to sleep." You may need to stand at the door and return her to bed if she is getting out. As pp says I would start with the clock just 10 mins later than her typical wake up and work for there.

If you are going through 1-0 nap transition though it is probably routine related and will be better once she is consistently on no nap. Do you have another thread helping you with that or do you want to post what you are doing routine-wise here?

Yeh, if she's allowed to get up even though the sun is showing, she'll just get up. So be prepared for a few days of protest. Once she manages to wait quietly in her room even for 10 minutes until the sun shows, then you can start moving the clock forwards.

We played games with it in the day where I would set it for 1 minute later initially and we would both lie down and pretend to sleep, then when light came on we shouted 'waking up time!' and danced about.  Then 2 mins, 5 mins etc.  Then I set it for a short time and went outside, when she shouted me that light was on I went instantly back in and we did our dancing etc again. She got it very quickly :) but I agree set the goals small to begin with xx

Ok I will start that tomorrow and see how it goes. I have got her out of bed at the crying even when the sun is not out yet. Did you all find the gro clock worked?

I'm also going to weigh in here.  When DS was doing the 2-1 transition, he did some unreasonably early WU's.  5:20am was the worst I believe.  However, once we were solidly on the one nap he went back to his usual WU time of 6:30-7am.  I haven't started using our Groclock yet as he's now sleeping in! (definitely his father's son!)

Absolutely it works but consistency is key - no getting up before the sun xx

Yes it works in letting them know it is too early and they won't be allowed to get up.  You have to enforce it.

I agree with advice to use a gro clock, has been great here :)

However, if your LO doesn't actually need more sleep, then you'll prob also have to also tweak her routine a bit. However, if you're in the 1-0 then this could be tricky.  Where are you in the transition? Do you see later WUs after no nap days (if you have any)?

We have only had the occasional NND at the moment I can usually get at least a 30-40 mins nap even if its late like 2:40 but WU is generally earlier. She has always been an EW when OT. But even when I get a decent nap she still wakes early. She just walks about telling me she is tired all day but "I no go sleep"  ::)

So just in the early stages at the moment.

It works in the sense that it is a clock. When a LO wakes up, she has no idea if it is 5am or 8am - just as you wouldn't, unless you look at a clock. The clock simply shows her if it is 'morning' or 'night'. But of course, she won't go back to sleep just from looking at a clock - that only happens if you are 100% consistent enforcing, 'if it is night we stay in bed, if it is morning it is ok to get up.' My kids clock is set for 6.50 on school days. If they wake up at 6.45 they still have to stay quiet in bed until they see the sun on the clock.

I think she must have heard us talking because this weekend her WU's have been 7:20 and 8:45 (unheard of). I think she must be catching up from OT but for this weekend I will take it  ;D
